Do you use the clay bar on the painted plastic parts, or just the sheet metal?

Thanks in advance!

Just on metal. Plastic parts will clean up and shine beautifully with Meguiar's plastic cleaner.

If the plastic is painted like the metal what is the difference? Aren't you still cleaning the painted surface only?

I do not think that the plastic (you mean the trunk inserts on either side of the licence plate) are painted. Nor is the trim peice at the bottom of the trunk and under the taillights. I cleaned it up with the plastic cleaner and did the taillights also...big improvement. A little wax after the cleaning certainly won't hurt.

Sorry I wasn't more specific; I was thinking mainly of the front and rear bumper covers.

Polish and wax on the bumper covers.

You can clay those bumper surfaces-really helps to remove those pesky insects. I do mine and they clean/shine up nicely.
