View Full Version : Winter car woes.

Well I just tried out a Subaru Outback XT 2005 wagon. Surprise surprise the sunroof and I do get along. It is padded and quite roomy but the seats in the Subie are terrible. Small little hard things and they don't go far enough back. My 04 Subie Legacy seats were bigger but very uncomfortable, these new seats are like barstools, tiny little things.
Anyhow the 2005 2006 Subies I have been looking at all use the same seats and now are all crossed off my list. There is still the Baja option, but given it is based on the 2004 that I used to have, and has less headroom, I really have to wonder. It might work but only might. If only there was one close by to try.
Anyway I'm back looking for a VW Phaeton deal, If I can get one without spending too much I can keep my Marauder. hmm. But i really need a non truck winter car. Big enough safe enough and AWD.
What else is there?

Why AWD? Four snows work great up in the great white north.

Didn't work great last year. Then again last years snow was a really bad one, and the tires were on their second year...
I'm not really considering selling the Marauder, unless a really nice offer comes my way, then maybe. Just last year in the snow it wasn't very good, "Mustang bad" one could say. I spoiled myself when I had my Subie in the snow those few days when i had it and it snowed. AWD is amazing in the snow, RWD just isn't. I always buy snow tires.

The Phaeton I was considering I just can't seem to pull the trigger on. It seems the website devoted to them is full of rich people complaining about the huge costs of these otherwise great cars. It reminds me so much of the Bentleys and Rollers of old that I just can't get one. $12000 for an Air shock because you have to replace all four and the controller although if your lucky VW will cover the cost for some or most of this maybe. I can't afford the maybe, let alone the $2000 for one air shock.
The one I was considering is $14500US but by the time I count the shipping import taxes duty and conversion to Candian dollars instead of being $15500C it is $25000C. Just crazy.
Maybe it is time to consider a Truck or SUV.

Just go with an F-150 4WD and you will be fine!

I'm thinking more along the lines of a 2002 Lincoln Navigator.

An F-150 is much the same. Same frame, same power train, just a different body. Get a crew cab, and a higher trim level, say King Ranch or Lariat and you have a nicer vehicle than the Lincon to boot!
Half the trucks sold in Canada are sold here in Alberta. You can pick up a 2006 -2007 for cheap right now! They are coming back with 40,000 on the clock as lease returns, not a scratch on them.
I'll bet you could find an F150 or F250 King Ranch for under $30k, with 3-4 years factory waranty left on it.

RE: the original post...
I was also considering a Subaru, but I was more in the mindset of the Baja. I had the same complaint about the seats.
I may still trade my Marquis in (Baja, Magnum, or 90s Impala SS, or something else...maybe another Marauder) but if I do go the Baja route, I will be swapping out the seats for some Recaros or something a bit more supportive/comfortable.
Maybe if you get a good enough deal on the car you could do the same thing?

Only pickup I would consider would be a Lightning and that is not a winter car.

I don't even think it's a car.

It is. Your efforts, and the efforts of others to get him banned worked.
Too bad, because the collective IQ around here just dropped.

I don't see anything in his recent posts that is that banworthy...
I mean don't get me wrong, for awhile I thought a lot of his posts were inane, but lately they haven't been bad at all.

Can't lay this banning on me....I have steered clear of his threads, and any interaction with him for some time.
I don't know what he did now*, but it was not in response to me.
I won't pretend that I am upset nor sorry to hear the news.
Can someone 'PM' me with what occurred?
*except for starting another VW Pheaton discussion....:shake:
BTW: 'adam/cleveland'....you have to change that 'Koala punch' video clip....I lose it everytime I read one of your posts!...

Unfortunate. People can use a little enlightenment from time to time.
