View Full Version : Marauder Depreciation -- Good News

Looks like the Marauder is not depreciating as fast as other car models.
Each year about this time, I receive a Personal Property tax bill from the Commonwealth of Virginia on my fleet. Each car has an assessed value that is pulled from the NADA database. I have been tracking this since 2006 primarily to see how I am getting "screwed" on the PP Tax relief effort that was supposed to go away completely years ago (i.e. 100% reduction). The real reduction this year was only 64% and decreasing each year. But that's another story.
The rest of my "fleet" has depreciated 52% over the 2006-2009 period. However, the Marauder has only depreciated 39%. According to Prince William County, my MM is now worth $10,650. Of course, they couldn't buy it from me for that price. :P Sentimental value .... you know. ;)
The GOOD NEWS is that MM depreciation appears to be slowing down. It is holding its value better than most models.
I realize that my "sample" size is pretty small; but I wanted to pass along some positive information on our aging cars. :D

I remember when I was working in Washington I lived in Maryland rather than pay those damned Virginia personal property taxes. I think they still can come in your house and tax the tv or stereo or whatever if they want (I know they dont, but I think they can). I agree with your point though that the price of a nice clean MM is probably as low as it will go, around 13-15k (barring gasoline at 8 dollars a gallon or something).

I was a resident of Maryland up until I retired from the US Army and paid Maryland taxes for about 25 years. Believe it or not, Virginia is still a better deal even with the Personal Property tax and county real estate taxes. Virginia's income tax is lower when you factor in the Maryland County rider that adds up to 50% to the state income tax. I believe that the "rider" in some counties like Baltimore County, Montgomery and Anne Arundel is up to about 60% now.
The real problem with the PP tax in Virginia is its "visibility". The dayum thing comes as an annual bill each year. That's what gets people fired up. A major bill just before kids go back to school and college. Timing sucks. If they would bury it inside the income tax like Maryland does, they would cut the uproar considerably since many people don't know how to figure their taxes anyway.
The :bs: on PP tax relief is that it only applies on cars with a value of $20K or less. If you own a $40,000 car, you get tax relief on the first $20,000 and you pay the full rate on the other $20,000. Ain't nothing out there under $20K that stimulates my interest. It actually encourages people to keep their Clunkers.

I'm stationed here in VA, but keep my vehicles registered in Texas.

What worries me about the value of our Marauders, officially, is that the cost to replace, especially for a Canadian market car is not what the actual cost to replace is. Should it be written of in an accident the amount paid will not cover the amount to replace.

I believe that'd be true anywhere.

This is true in the US as well. For profit insurance companies do not do anybody any favors. Generally a bunch of scam artists.

Force the issue and have the insurance company repair the car. I had to do that with my wife's low mileage Firebird as they wanted to pay what the high mileage, worn-out firebirds were selling for.

Worth $10,650 but worth a $1,000,000,000,000,000,000.00 to me, LOL!
