It was steep, scary at times as there is no shoulder, no guardrail and I'm driving my big Marauder. My wife was afraid to look out the front passenger window!! lol -- It was a great trip into NH and VT. Went with the Family for a long weekend. Coming down the mountain I stopped twice for about 10-15 mins to let the brakes cool! They were very hot. Saw a minivan at the bottom that didn't stop to cool brakes and there was smoke everywhere. Very cool trip. Cost about $50 bucks for a Family of 4 to drive up in their own Marauder. Left it in first gear all the way up and all the way down. I didn't want to hurt the trans. Drove eight hundred and twenty three miles over the weekend. 93 octane was $2.71 in NH! (cheap for NY prices)
Here's some pics!

There was about 5 places on the way up where you could get some water for your radiator. I did get the temp up to 200 (a bit high for me normally)
Again highly recommend this trip if you want somewhere cool to go.

Those are great pics! Brought back memories of May '96. We climbed Mt. Washington in a GMC pickup and I came back down with a ring on my left hand. Most memorable!. Got hitched that October in Jackson, just a few miles away. Would love to take that climb again! Going up to New Hampshire this Oct. with our car. :thinker:

I'm going to NH next week on a family vacation and was thinking of going to Mt Washington. Thanks for the heads up.

Excellent! I had a blast taking a rental car up Pikes Peak. Someday we should have a Marauder day and drive up. I hear Todd at TCE knows a thing or two about that road.
Great pics!! I used to hike up Washington at least once a year when I lived up there. Huntington Ravine trail up was my favorite!!
They have annual bike and running races up the car road!

Eh-heh. No power slides. They do race up it occasionally. (8 miles up in about 7 minutes ) Yeah, I was debating about the badge. I put it on then noticed it was crooked by about 4 degrees. It's the only bling I got! No one even knows what it is.

Cool - make sure that your brakes are in good order. I'd be curious to hear what Todd at TCE has to say.

Hey ryan you want to attempt this trip in my car with my current brakes?

I've done it four times. Twice in Towncars, once in a 68 Cyclone GT (4 speed), and (the best) once in my 2003 TBird with the top down. Never gets old.
The TBird's Select Shift Trans came in very handy. Kept the brakes from heating up. Great trip.
If anyone is planning to go to northern NH, also take the Kancamangus Highway scenic highway. Not as exciting as the MT Washington autoroad, but nice anyway.
As an alternative, you can go up Mt Washington by train (MT Washington Cog Railway). We did that way back in the 50's.

One of my favorite rides is up and down Mt. Washington. Don't know if you did it, but the Kancamangus Highway between Loon Mt. and Conway is another great run.

They were out west in the Sierra Nevadas.
From Wikipedia ..... "
Nicky Collini (Desi Arnaz) and his fiancé Tacy (Lucille Ball), buy (despite Nicky's extreme reluctance and dire predictions), a large trailer home (a 32-foot (9.8m) 1953 New Moon, which cost $5,345 at the time), so that they can save money that would otherwise be spent on a house, and also be able to travel around the USA to civil engineering projects that Nicky is employed on.
They have to buy a more powerful car to tow the trailer, a 1953 Mercury Monterey convertible with a 125 HP flathead V8 engine, and the money spent starts to mount up. The honeymoon trip to the Sierra Nevada mountains rapidly becomes a catalogue of disasters. These include Tacy's attempts to cook dinner in a moving trailer, and a cliffhanging ride on a narrow road through the mountains."

Oversized vehicles, like Hummers, are not allowed on the Mt Washington Auto Road.
Also, the weather at the base can be completely different from the peak. Colder temp and high winds.
Has anyone taken the Cog Railway up the mountain?
I must have been around 10-12 years old when I did it with my folks, and I can still remember it.
Using the town of North Conway as a base, there's plenty of stuff to do in northern NH, if you're looking for a fun vacation..

Been up the mountian all thre ways, walk, drive, and Cog. Cog is the best! North of N. Conway, be sure to get to Berlin. Surprisingly, there's a bunch of cool stuff there.
