Mercurymarauder.net is getting ready to test a concealed radar detector offered up by a national vendor.

Tonight, we did the install on the car and are really quite impressed with it.

A full review will be coming later in the week... Here are some teasers in the mean time...

here in Virginia, it is illegal to have Radar detectors.... Tell me more. I am all over stealth.

This unit is just the detector, I'm waiting on the jammer to come in. It's also invisible to VG2 which is the protocol the radar detector "detector"'s work on...

You can make it as stealthy as you want, mine, unless you're looking for it, you won't see it. You could actually just mount the head completely up under the dash and go by sound alone... Very cool unit.

Compared to my Passport Solo I've been using, this unit is ALOT more sensitive and picks up signals a good 1/4 mile sooner, yet doesn't false nearly as much as the solo does.

Anyway, I have to save some stuff for the review, stay tuned, I should have it up sometime this weekend.

Logan: Radar detector thoughts: Years back, I put the readout head inside the cigarette ash try in my wife's RX-7. Put the detector in behind the grill same as you. I could put the lid down on the ash tray whenever I wanted to conceal the unit. Also put a kill switch back under the dash to kill the unit if we got stopped. Sure didn't want any chipping sounds coming out of the center console.

Here in Texas, detectors are legal, so it's not a problem. But you're right, in a non-legal state, concealment is key...

Stealth Vic will be following this thread about stealth radar detectors with great interest! I was just about to purchase an Escort 8500... I'll hold off until I read about your evaluation Logan. Although I do not intentionally speed, there are several "regular" radar traps on secondary roads that I use to commute to and from work. I know exactly where they "hide", but I'm worried that some afternoon I'll forget about them and go sailing down the hill a little too fast and get stopped. Looking forward to reading about this new unit!

I use the same unit. Installed in front as Logans is and I put the covered control head 3" to the left of the clock. Just looking at it you can not tell what it is. Works great and has saved my bacon many, many times.

Funny you should mention it, I've been so darned busy I hadn't gotten to do the writeup, but it's about half done and I should have it up today or tomorrow at the latest...

Logan,

Is there a sensor also mounted at the rear of the car? For laser detection, you would have to have a sensor facing back (like on the Valentine's).

I carry the Passport SRX this is a totaly concealed unit New programmable laser transceivers (2 front, 1 rear) provide maximum protection against laser targeting. Using multiple laser diodes (6 front, 3 rear), these remarkable sensors provide early warning, and return a "shifted" laser signal - laser protection that is Performance Certified by Speed Measurement Labs as 94% effective. The new Passport SRX provides supercharged performance on all radar bands, including X, K, and SuperWide Ka bands. This new custom-installed remote detector provides the ultimate in discreet protection. New High-Performance "Multi-Shift" Laser Transceivers

It is the best thing I have ever used next to the Valentine 1.

1495.00 is the sugested retail price, installed. This unit is not sold to the general public, and only a Escort Dealer can buy them, I have installed about a dozen they are very good units, but again thet are not cheap a Valentine 1 is 400.00

I guess money grows on trees.

Then again with the way I (safely) drive (er, speed). It would be worth the ticket cost/point cost and lack of DL suspensions.

Not to mention one less thing to have to pack with you when you leave the vehicle. Plus if you dress the car up like a cop car, and a cop drives by you, how dumb would it look to have a fuzzbuster on your windshield (unless you diguise it has a radar gun display; yea right) as he/she eloquently takes a pekeeboo into your domain.
