View Full Version : Trunk Opens by itself when you shift into Drive...no joke

Ok...I searched for this odd thing and had no luck.

My friend's Marauder (2003, 300A, 134,xxx miles) has the oddest problem.

When you put the car in drive, the trunk pops open without fail. I know it sounds weird but it's true.

Anyone ever heard of this? He doesn't know anything about cars (aside from driving them) so my temporary fix, until I can trace the actual problem, will be to disconnect the trunk release solenoid and/or pull that fuse (if it has its own fuse which I doubt) and he'll have to use the key for now.

This is only a temporary fix so he can actually get to work...

Any thoughts????

Sorry, I am of no help....but I always think of our cars of having a sort of mafia look about them and this would be by far the worst problem one could encounter...

sorry but that's funny sure someones not messing with him. Your looking at a short to power are you sure it the drive position that opens the trunk and it's not shorted to the reverse lamps check the operation in each gear position. Ideally you should trace the wires and find the damage but it would probable be easier to just overlay the switch circuit vt/ye wire from the solenoid to the switch in the left frt door. good luck

Seems to happen only when he shifts into drive...,ot while already in drive.

I'll have to see if it does it from Park into Drive and/or Neutral into Drive. I haven't even looked at it yet so we'll see what the problem is.

I will have a look at the reverse lights and see if there's a short.

I figure I can just disconnect it so he can at least use the key manually.

Thanks for the insight. I wonder if anyone has had this problem.

could always throw rocket boosters in the trunk and make the auto-open useful.

just sayin....

Try disconnecting the trunk release button in the door panel. Might help in narrowing down the problem.

Found the problem. 1 stupid wire from the main trunk connector near the driver's side trunk hinge was out pulled out. Don't how it happened but it did. Recrimped a new pin and good as new. :)

At least I had my Marauder as a reference point to troubleshoot his. :)

I was going to ask if maybe a friend was hiding around the corner and hitting the trunk release on his remote... I did that with a friend of mine in his brand new pontiac years back. We'd pull up to a light (I had the spare remote hidden in my hand) and I'd pop the trunk. He'd swear, throw open the door and go shut the trunk! I just about pissed myself I was laughing so hard! I did this for about ten minutes! :D
