I just bought an 03 MM from my work for pretty cheap but it has a pretty good oil leak. It looks like its by the oil filter somewhere, maybe above it....cant see too well up there. Is there anything up there thats known to leak? I replaced the filter just to see but it still leaks. It has 84000 on it and runs good, just want to get this fixed asap. Thanks for the help!

It may be a front seal. Its pretty easy to replace. Mine leaked and it made a huge mess all over the front of my engine.

if its above the oil filter then it could be a valve cover gasket as well.

Is the piece that the oil filter screws on to a possibility? The oil only seems to run down by the filter then on to the frame. I only see one bolt up there but I know there has to be one or two more. I will double check the valve cover but I dont think its up that far. The filter does not have a drop on it either. Its hard to see anything without it up in the air.

Ding, ding, ding you are correct! There is a gasket that the oil filter housing has that seals it to the block... Replace it and your done! ;)

You may be seeing whats left over from past oil changes as well. When you remove the filter, oil will pour all over the rack and who knows if anyone ever went ahead and cleaned up the mess.
That's why I have a oil deflector installed under the filter.

if its above the oil filter then it could be a cam cover gasket as well.
Fixed it for you!

Clean off the engine then keep an eye on it. Maybe nothing like Blackened300a said.

Before and after I did the oil change I cleaned the area pretty well. It was super caked with oil/dirt from never being fixed. It maked the leak seem worse now that its clean lol. How hard it that housing to remove?

Just looked and its definitely not the valve cover. Pretty sure its that housing but dont see why that would start leaking.

If you've cornered the leak there, then look at getting a gasket for the oil filter adapter. Fel-Pro #70801. You'll notice that the adapter also accommodates the coolant path.
PeteSzerszen posted his experience.
