View Full Version : Boat motor under my hood?

Happened 3 times in the last week - Once when the remote start didn't start, and twice when I had started the car cold and shut it off right away -

There's a rather loud rumbling sound - kinda like a dishwasher running - From the engine compartment. The engine is definitely not running. It stopped when I turn the key back to "on" - It hasn't lasted long enough yet for me to get the hood open to listen closely. I'll have to do that.

Any clues at all? Thanks!

Now that I know what it is, it sounds , umm, just like a compressor! (not so much like a boat motor) - Ha. Thanks! I *was* concerned. Not used to a sound like that from a car.

Wait until it hisses at you when you get out! It's really passing gas then.

In case you didn't know yet, it's probably the compressor....

12 posts and I can't believe noone has answered this question. Its your air compressor for the suspension making that noise.. :-) BTW, it will hiss and gurgle when it is discharging the air to lower it.

To lower it? I thought it was all one way, raise it to ride hight, never seen my car lowered. Cool.

You should probably have the engine in your "Motor Boat" checked out ... if it sounds like the MM air compressor, you might have bigger problems. ;)

17 posts, and still no one has given this guy a right answer!

It's your turn signal fluid pump... You're running low. There's a cap in the engine compartment labeled "710" remove that and put about 4 quarts of power steering fluid in it (it's the same stuff, "710 fluid" is hard to find).

If that doesn't solve the problem, then it has to be your check engine light bearings rattling (notice it only makes the sound when your 'check engine' light comes on?). The solution for this is a bit trickier... There's a black box with a bunch of wires connected to it under your hood. You need to cut the RED and BLUE wires (All of them), then switch them around. Make sure you disconnect your battery first! This is a common problem in Mercury cars... Shoddy manufacturing!

P.S. If you took any of this seriously, give me your car, because you're too dense to drive!

This right here is exactly why I have high performance cross drilled brake lines, it really quiets down that air compressor. :D :D

haha.

Seriously, though... My first Grand Marquis ('92) had air ride... It scared the ***** out of me the first time I turned the key to 'on'... It was in a dealership's lot, and the look on my face had to have been priceless... I was 18, and the guy that was showing me the car started laughing so hard I thought he was going to piss himself... I asked "WHAT'S SO FUNNY? WHAT DID I BREAK?!" And between the stifled laughs he said "That's the air ride compressor kicking in! I've never seen someone jump so hard over a growl coming from under the hood!"

I got that car for $1500 because the guy thought I was so amusing (The sticker said $2250)

Sounds like you need to rotate your floor mats.

I'd check for the correct stickers and rubber bands on the engine. If you bought the car used, previous owner may have removed them.

If they're all in place, next thing I'd check is the air suspension air compressor. If the decibel level of the compressor, when running, exceeds 90.23 dB, it's time to get it checked out.
