I went over a pothole doing 70 on I-55 tonight. I was alright (sorry to disappoint some of you) but the cars tire went right out. I looked at it and it looks like I just knocked it in some weird way to knock the tire off the rim sort of... it's still on. I'm going to see if this can be blown back up or if I need a new tire.

Do you guys think this car be fixed? I didn't notice a hole or hear any noise upon stopping the car and check it out. I'd rather buy a new tire, but hey times are tough.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I would get it off the rim and have the rim inspected first, then the inside of the tire, then maybe mount it and see what happens. The tire is seated against the rim with a great deal of internal pressure, not just the 36 lbs. or whatever of air, and if it got knocked off the rim something serious happened.

Was it up to the correct pressure when you hit the pothole, or could it have been running low? I'm thinking a nail has been in there a while, you had a very slow leak that you hadn't yet noticed (easy to do, esp. in the front) and may have only had 10 or so pounds of air. If you had driven on it and warmed it up, and then kind of squirmed the tire at an angle over a hole, it may have forced the bead off the rim just enough to dump all the air. Only thing I can think of.

Good luck and please let us know what you find.

What size tire do you need? I have some good used ones, KDWS's though.

I need a front tire and now that I'm at it I might as well replace them both.

This morning I looked at the tire and it's shot. It looks like someone took a knife and sliced it open, but it was the pot hole. The tire blew as soon as I hit it.

Spectragod let me know what you want for your tires. I'll bite if the price and shipping cost is lower than 2 new ones.

Is your wheel bent? You might want to lay it flat on its side to see if it's still true.

BTW, you should invest in road hazard if you buy new tires. The idea is to avoid hitting potholes to begin with (on an interstate, wow, that should be reported to IL DOT) , but since you seem to be caught in the gravitational pull of any hazard of any sort that you get near, road hazard is a smart option for you.

I would Donny, but I already bought a used set of tires. When I am able to get a new set for any of my vehicles I still remember to go with that program. Thanks for the advice. ;)

SORRY to hear about your hard luck...driving around Chicago that's about Par for the course unfortunately! GLAD it didn't come out any worse -- be sure and check your wheel or rim real good as the guys have said. (So did you limp the car to an exit or did you change that wheel out on the interstate?!)

I changed it right on the interstate. The front left one blew and I pulled over to the left sholder. It was a great location because a guardrail was just starting a little beyond where I stopped, so I had a lot of width and felt as safe as could be..... for being in the situation that I was in.
