:(FM1 & FM2 only deliver a slight "hiss" when selected either by the mode button or the on/off button on the radio. All the other functions of the radio work, including the trunk CD changer. If you go to the pre-set stations, or if you use "seek" or "scan" the result is the same-hiss!
The AM plays but with some interference-all stations respond as do pre-sets.
Car has 17,000 miles and is in show condition. Other than the dealer is there something I should try?

I'm pretty sure it's a common problem to lose the FM reception...only fix would be a replacement radio.

X2 on my radio when the car was about 18 months old . The dealer replaced the unit with a new one . No problems since .
A friend who worked at the Merc parts department said he thought there were 2 different suppliers of the same style radio and one was a better unit . More than that I don't know other than this current unit has been excellent .

Depends on the type of ESP he has.
I opted for ESP coverage on the power train only. I f he has full coverage than it's most likely covered.

Google United Radio in Syracuse, NY, they can fix it if you want to keep the OEM unit.

Same thing happened to me. I used my ESP and the replacement has worked fine. I heard there was a bad chip in a batch of radios. My FM did not receieve anything (hiss) but my CD still worked...

It's a common problem with the MM's radio. You can do a few things.
Find another MM radio.
Take out the radio and try resoldering the connections.
Send the radio out for repairs.
Replace it with a Ford Escape radio/Cd changer. Use the search function.
Replace with a aftermarket radio.

Many thanks for your suggestions. My Ford ESP coverage is the "full" type so I'll check with the dealer(and pay my $50)

If it doesn't cover it, look up the thread where it takes about swapping in a Ford Escape 6-disc in-dash changer. My single CD stopped working last year and the CD changer works whenever it wants to. I'll be looking into doing this swap upgrade soon.
