Greetings,
Recently my subwoofer started acting up. It seems to play normally at low volumes but starts to clip and then drops out as volume is increased. Long story short, I'm getting a replacement sub amplifier from John (Pops) but I am afraid that's not going to fix my problem... I removed the subwoofer/amp and enclosure in preparation for the replacement amp and have been driving the car for a couple of days. What I have noticed is that the other 4 speakers seem to do the same thing... They have decent bass/mid-bass at low volumes but it seems to drop off at higher volumes (above 1/2).

My question is in regards to the amplification of the signal to both the subwoofer and to the other 4 speakers. Obviously the head unit has an amplifier for the door and package tray 6 x 8's but does it also amplify the signal before it goes to the subwoofer? This is a key piece of info because if an amplified signal goes to the subwoofer, then the problem may not be with the sub amp but rather the head unit 'pre' amp.

I have a 2nd head unit that had the typical loss of radio function that so many 300A's had... can I canabalize the amplifier from this one - assuming it's internal and not external to the head unit without issue????

FYI - Radio diagnostic turns up no DTC's...
