View Full Version : Why I drive the parts outta it

Ever since I have had the Marauder (which is almost seven years) I have had a ton of heat from fellow adult members as to the treatment of my car. I would like to explain why I enjoy it so much.

When I read articles in Hot Rod and Car Craft (thanks Leadfoot281 for turning me onto CC) it seems like every month there is an artice on someone two or three times my age that misses their car. Not just any car, but their toy, their fast car, their street machine. (Martyo and I are cool now I guess) The artices mention being 19 or 23 and having that 13 second or faster ride, especially a car someone built on a budget or was unsuspecting.

The people always say how they wish they had their car and their youth back. Even when I would look up car songs on youtube adults would leave comments saying how they missed their fast cars and their days of street racing and would give anything to have it back, right now I have it.

I am living it now. I enjoy my car, but I take good care of it. I might not care as much as I used to about the body, but it doesn't have damage, rust or major scratches. I decided that cash is better spent on keeping the car safe than keeping it looking 100% show room good. Most everyone says they cannot believe the car looks this good for having 147,000 miles on it and when I see some cars with less than half the mileage (any car) it's a shame that people just treat their cars like a hamper.

This is the only car I can think of that I can use to go to school, haul loads for work because of the trunk, have room for my friends, go drag racing with, go street racing with all in the same week. This car can do it all except tow... as of now.

I have seen many cars that run 12s, but they are lacking the things I keep in. I keep the headlights in, use pump gas, I have leather seating, full interior, A/C, room for seven CDs and keep a trunk load supplies for any situation. Most are lucky to run 12s and call it a day. I demand more and I get it. Just last weekend I was racing at a Drag Strip and the next morning I was getting 50 pound sacks of potatos in the same form of a car. It really does it all.

I have learned that the newer a car is, the easier it will be to modify performance wise. If I got a classic vehicle I would have to change a ton of stuff to get everything to work and if I started with a five year old Mercury as suppose to a fifty year old Chevy, we all know the Mercury will be a lot easier to work on/with since the parts are all newer to begin with and will last longer. If I put a 572 in a STOCK 59 Chevy El Camino who knows what else I would have to change to get it to work. Tranny, gears, brakes, electrical... exc. The Merc is cheaper and the parts are newer.

Everytime I break something it happens to be aftermarket and I also fix it almost instantly. I will usually shop around to save money, but the Marauder never stays sitting for long, unless I am waiting on something. This site has helped me though ANY problem I have ever had with the car. The car makes me feel good too. I have something very few do or even know about. What's even better is the speed. Sometimes I'll drive around and become jelious of people or be in a bad mood. I just give the car 1/8th throttle and the tires screech from first gear to second. It makes me feel like a million bucks over and over, it never gets old. I really like shutting down guys in cars that cost 3 times as much as mine or some guy in "modern muscle" that thinks he's the king and before you know it, he's shut down by a black sedan. It makes him look bad and his girlfriend laugh... most are good spirits about it, as am I, but I have yet to lose when screwing around.

I will drive this car until it isn't worth two cents and then maybe it'll be time for a rest, but it's not going anywhere. As long as there are Pepboys, Speed Shops, Junkyards, Zack and this website around, I will have my fun. Wither it's racing a Zo6 off the line before two lanes go into one, a night at the track or just blasting Doo Wop music when I'm driving five under the limit I will always have a purpose for the car and will always enjoy it.

Enjoy what you can now, worry about it later, but be safe.

That's all folks.

back in that time period I dont think street racing was as frowned upon back in the 60's and 70's.... Certainly didnt have organized street racing busts and portable car crushers like they do now...

Most Zo6s are done when they are on the street. If they are on the track the drivers know better. So there! :P

Yes, buy a car to drive it and enjoy it, not to garage it and baby it.

If there's ANYONE on this site that lives up to the saying we're always seeing posted and in the Hot Rod magazines,"drive it like ya stole it",it's Dom,and he probably has gotten more fun and excitement out his MM per $ spent than anybody else here.
He drives it,breaks it,fixes it(or gets it fixed),and starts the cycle again,he sure as he!! ain't afraid to get on it.
Have fun Dom,but be safe, pick your street race sites carefully so no one gets hurt, parts do break and cars do crash.

I know a guy who has almost 600 timeslips, hasn't backed down on any skreet racing, has had his car over 100 mph all but maybe 30 days of the 7 plus years he's owned it, has been to meets all over the land, and has photographic eveidence of burnouts in nearly all the lower 48. This guy has lined up with Marty when 13's were still the big number, had lunch with TJA on the Cape, helped get the Honda crowd arrested at the Berlin Tpke Cruise for acts done by Marauders. Same guy saw TMF blow up the first time, while hanging with Bradley, Sgt. Mac, and Zack, does a 4th of July Bridge burnout video yearly, has nearly 218K miles on his car, one win and several runner-ups at major drag races, finished 6th in points at a famous Alabama drag strip, dispite missing a month, was 23rd in the FFW Mod Motor division a few years ago. I believe he has the world's only lighted badge mod too. There's plenty more, so move your bad self over runner up.

Same guy also learned a valuable lesson from a fine Southern Gentleman who formerly owned the best damn muffler shop in the south. Always toss the keys to anyone who wants to drive it. Some of his happiest moments came this way.

Well said. Exactly why I got rid of my Camaro SS. I was tired of it sitting in the garage. I wanted a car that can "do it all" EVERYDAY. The Marauder fits that and then some!!!

Kudo's and then some to him Casey, that's driving it alright!Still and all Dom ain't doing too bad for a young guy still in schools, the school of hard knocks and the one where you might get a piece of paper that says you put the hours in.
I've got to admit to not beating on mine as much as I'd like to,I've got a darn CDL and one good moving violation and I have to retake ALL the tests at renewal time, written and driving, for the car, truck and motorcycle.Too damn much hassle for me.Before CDL's it never bothered me as much but now close to retirement age I need the pension and insurance. Back in 74 I got stopped for 158 in a 55 zone (I was showing some smartazz in a Dino my tail lights with my rusty Ford) and managed to talk my way out of it.I had a king size horse shoe up my a$$ that night. The cops like to chewed 10 pounds off my hind end that night before they let me go though!

I never met you but I agree completely (even with the windbag comment). You expressed the same feeling maybe all MM owners have once they recognize what they have. Talk about comfort, performance (especially with a blower), versatility and the fact there are less than 11K in the world. This is by far my favorite car ever. I hope to enjoy it until something comes along to replace it (in maybe 15 years).
