do explain Paul.

I was cruising about 80 mph hour during the 4th hour of my trek when I noticed a big vibration. I thought it was the road at first but it was noticable when I stepped on the gas. I pull over in the rain and feel the engine missing. No CEL just a big miss and a loss of power. The next rest area is 20 miles up the road. I head up the to the rest area and pop the hood to find my passenger side cam cover black and coated with this melted rubber all down the side of the cover. I removed the coil cover to find #2 coil boot melted out of the cover. I pulled the coil out and tried to remove the little bit of whats left of the boot out of the hole. I happened to bring some coils from my CV in case I needed one, I would be able to rig something up. I pulled the spring out and the rubber boot from the 2V coil and installed them on the 4V coil head, shoved it in the hole and cranked the engine which at that point, the sparkplug shot out of the hole and remained in the coil.
Now the fun begins, I have a sparkplug socket but my extention is too small to reach the plug in the hole. There is nothing in this rest area but a coffee shop so I cant find any tools to purchase. I found a guy that had some tools but nothing that would work other then a hole tap, so I stuck it in the end of my short extention and put a socket on the end of the tap which was able to thread the plug in. Lucky for me, the plug threaded itself out and not shot itself out otherwise I would be waiting for a tow truck to haul me back to NY. I put the coil back on and started it up. It still had a slight miss but nothing like it did before the meltdown. I made it all the way to Indy at which point I located the local Ford dealership and parts store, picked up some new plugs and a extention along with a new coil and all is back to normal. I was even able to clean the cam cover off without any damage.
Nothing like standing out in the freezing rain with no tools facing the idea that Ill have to pay for a tow, a thread repair, and losing all the money I laid out for this trip. :depress:

Wow. Serious stuff, glad you got it fixed. I'd recommend the GMS ropes if you don't have those already. You are lucky you did ruin the heads.

I know 2V heads don't have a full set of threads for plugs, but I thought the 4V didn't have this problem/issue.

Did you run it at the drags? time?

I have the GMS connectors in there. The plug backed out and bent the connector which rubbed through the rubber boot and shorted out. It must have looked like a welding rod went off in there because the rubber melted and oozed out the coil cover onto the cam cover. Plus the underside of my coil cover is charred. The GMS connector now has a permanent S bend in it and the underside of the coil melted but still worked enough to get me to Indiana. Just a idle it would miss every so often and gave the exhaust a cammed sound to it.

We drove 60 miles to the track and I ran 5 minutes after arriving and pulled a 14.185. I was planning on letting the car cool down for a few hours but they were calling people up because they were closing the staging lanes so with only 20 minutes cool down time I went 14.132.
All my 13 second runs were in 40 degree temps and with plenty of cool down time.

Yep, 85 MPH is how I remember it too. ;) And we all had to sign liability waivers and wear special wrist bands for qualified and certified driver's only.

I did mention to the pace car driver that if she wanted to step it up a bit that we most assuredly could keep up with her.

I used a circular polarizer that day to cut through the haze. It also enhances the sky.

Post processing involved only using the unsharp mask and adding a bit of contrast lost with the polarizer.

All of my pics are up on Flikr.
The slide show there is better, the pictures larger, and itis easy to use.

I am also loading onto MM.NET, but being restricted to uploading five images at a time has really begun to wear on me.:(

As usual, low res and watermarked.
I anyone wants a copy, I can email the original.
Just give me the pic number.

I've had those same ones for months. Just forgot to apply one to the new Muth mirror.

I am sure it draws comments at car shows/cruises, Paul.

Its one of those subtle things that few people notice.

Looks great, but that lap doing 25 seems like a total teeze. I would have for sure gotten banned from the track quicker than Sherrman. It'd be kind cool to say that I'm banned from the Indy 500 due to a Black Flag.

I wanna be there 100% next year. Thing's will be better.
