View Full Version : Group Buy - Trunk Plates

The original group buy of trunk plates (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=56497) has been distributed, and a number of people indicated that they'd like a second chance at ordering. So, gullible as I am, here we go again.

THE RULES:

YOU send to my PayPal address ("n4ogl@comcast.net") the amount of $24.66 (calculated below) and wait.
If you can't figure out how to spell my address, read the other thread starting on page 2.
If I get more than 30 (thirty) prepaid orders by October 23, I can get the same price as before and I'll order and mail them.
If I don't get at least thirty (30) orders by then, I'll refuse the payments and you'll get $23.75 back ($24.66 less the $0.91 PayPal transaction fee).
I'll update this thread periodically with the total prepaid orders I have.
Because of postage costs, if you want one (1) set of plates, place one order. If you want two (2) sets of plates, place two single orders. If you want three sets of plates, well - figure it out.
Yes, this is more expensive than the first order. I lost money and took it out of my own pocket.

THE COST:

$19.00 Group Buy Price for trunk plates from Troy Products
$02.00 Padded envelope to mail them to you
$02.75 US Postal Service Postage
$00.91 What I thought the PayPal Transaction Fee would be.

$24.66 Total

If calculated using the actual transaction fee PayPal is taking ($1.02), total cost is $24.77. I'd appreciate everybody who hasn't paid yet adding that extra eleven cents.

Start the orders now!

Mark,
Thank you for opening up a second group buy, as I :sleepy: and missed the first one.
I appreciate your time & effort to re-offer this.
Hopefully it will not be any additional cost to you.
I will send you two seperate orders this evening via PayPal.

Anyone else miss the first group buy, or have since decided that they should get a set of these plates??
Let's make this happen!

BTW: I'm nervous just because of that police "how to" video circulating on the internet!

I installed them in my car today, quick & easy. Looks like the passenger's side is the most critical for security, but putting them on both sides looks better 'cause it's symmetrical.

Folks, I missed out on the last group buy on this...I did see the post about breaking into the trunk, but I thought it was just a video...I didn't pay attention. "You snooze, you lose" applies here.

These are a VERY good idea, especially if you ever have to leave your car unattended in a less than friendly area. The price is VERY reasonable for the protection it adds. Don't miss out like I did...let's get this second chance rolling!

Hey there!
Order placed to n4ogl@comcast.net for 1 set.
Does anyone have a picture (camera phone, whatever) of them installed?
I am all thumbs.
Thanks! I am moving and do not know the neighborhood and I felt an oz of prevention was worth the pound of cure.
Question: should I buy 2 sets? If someone DOES try to break in, will it destroy the first?
Thanks!

As of 12:26PM Eastern Daylight Time, I have eighteen (18) prepaid orders (including one person who sent payment for two in a single order, proving they did not read the posting (you know who you are) and who will need to send me another five bucks because the USPS charge goes up with the weight of two rather drastically).

If someone wants to post a link for me on the two Panther-related web sites mentioned in Post #26, go right ahead. I'm not a member there, and it seems silly to join just for a single activity (which they may reject anyway as too entrepenurial for the site). Just point them over here. We're still way short of the 30 I need to get the right price and, if we get a bunch more than thirty, I might be able to drive the price down still further.

Interestingly, PayPal is taking $1.02 per transaction, and not the $0.91 they did last time. This makes the 'new' price $24.77.

What is this product? What is a trunk plate used for?

It prevents breaking out the reverse light in the rear valence in order to access the trunk emergency release pull.
Check out the link in Post #1 of this thread.
They had a video that showed how you can break into a Panther's trunk in under 8 seconds by using this method.
Unfortunately the video was put on Youtube so now all the criminals know how easy it is and exactly how to do it.

Also - I don't think Ford is doing anything with the trunk stamping, especially since the Panther is D.O.A. after a year or so.

10-21-2009, 09:13 AM
1. As of 11:33 AM EDT Wednesday (21st) I have twenty-four confirmed orders.

2. I'm thinking about a small extension, but I'm sensitive to those that ordered right away. Of course, if we don't hit the magic number, even those that ordered right away get nothing, so extending seems the right things to do.

3. Help me promote this, if anyone you know hasn't yet heard about it.

4. As soon as we hit thirty-one, the group buy will close either way. Troy products said they'd give us the special price for at least thirty, and I want to order thirty-one just to be safe.

The plates are oriented with the holes parallel to the trunk lip aka horizontal. Mark where you want to drill the holes on either side of the reverse light sockets, center punch and drill the holes slightly larger than the bolts (make sure there are no wires where you drill). I used a small uni bit. Insert the plates (nut side towards the back of the car) long side first towards the top of the trunk lid and feed the rest of the plate in, position as necessary (it will be a tight fit and the plate will contact the back of the reverse socket but they will fit). Insert bolt(s) & internal tooth washer(s) and tighten.

Stand back, admire your work, have a cold one.................. or two.:beer:

Where do we stand now on a total count?
I agree with the extension on ordering for the GB....run it until the end of the month?

Thanks, Joe

BTW: If we are really close to making the GB, I would consider ordering a 3rd set to make the minimum.
I don't need a 3rd set, but I'd be willing to bet that within a month someone will ask; "Where can I get a set?"

Actually, it prevents only the 2nd step - reaching in to yank the emergency release. The first part, someone smashing out your taillight, can still happen.
Do these come with a little sticker that says 'trunk release protected by Troy'?

I was on the fence about ordering these - until someone actually stole the valve caps from my wheels. I didn't think that could ever happen, either.

sweetair
10-23-2009, 07:20 AM
I had placed an order for two. I am assuming this will fit a Grand Marquis from '01 as well, right?

Where do we stand on the order #?

N40GL
10-23-2009, 10:36 AM
It'll fit any car that uses the same trunk lid stamping as the Marauder. So, arguably, that would fit a CV, GM or MM, or a Schwinn that used the same trunk.

Twenty-eight today at 1:30 PM EDT. So I'm extending it until the end of the day that the thirty-first order comes in.

Great question - the answer is I am not sure. These are all going out USPS, so if the Postal Service accepts the same $2.75 to mail to Canada, we're good.

If it doesn't, would you be adverse to tossing in some more money to cover your postal fees if I learn after-the-fact that it's more expensive?

Does anyone on the thread have any experience here?

When I'll call the distributor, I'll also get two additional plates for those that only got one plate in the wrapped set. And THIS time, I'll check them more carefully before they go out.

Watch this space for notice that I'm not longer accepting orders, for when the plates have arrived, and for when they get tossed in the mail.
