I joined this site well over a year ago when I was thinking about a Marauder. I thought it was cool but it just didn't quite close the deal with me. Of course, this is in the context of also owning an SVT Cobra and a Harley F150 S'Crew. I let my interest ride. Didn't see a single one on the highway here in L.A. in a year. Then I heard about the fine tuning to the '04 and a week ago I saw a Marauder at a gas station when I drive in the fuel up my Cobra. The driver was a tall blonde slender woman with plenty of topography apparent under her thin tank top and second-skin black pants. I could see she even had a little Godshead tatoo at the base of her spine. The whole effect of her presence had me paying a little more attention when I got out of my car. We exchanged a few observations about her Marauder and my Cobra and before she closed her door, she fired up the 4 cammer. It was that sound. (Well sure, I wanted the girl but her dealer network was unknown.) Yeah, I have it in my Cobra, but hearing it from a 4 door hooked me in again. I mean, half the reason I bought my Harley pickup as my 4 door was the exhaust note. Next day I drove to a dealer to look at a black Marauder. First thing the salesman said when I pointed to the Marauder was "What is it about these Marauders? Actors and professionals buy them -- I even sold one to Charlie Sheen and he was rabid for it!"

Tonight a silver Marauder took up residence in my small fleet. I went looking for black nearer to me, not expecting to even remotely like silver, but there it was, the only Marauder on the local dealer's lot. The paint looks rich and has visual depth. The metal flake sparkles in a subtle way. Cool. That's the color. With two other black cars in the fleet, I could use a break.

Folks, this is a rockin' car. Same engine and drivetrain but it feels completely different than the 2003 I drove over a year ago. My salesman is a former USAC racer. He had a 22 mile test drive circuit laid out in his mind. He drove off the lot and took off for Mulholland Highway heading out west from L.A. He was a very competent driver and we motored about 10 miles of narrow undulating Mulholland at 75 mph. Riding shotgun, to me the car felt secure in its tracks, way beyond what one would expect from a 4000 lb. Blues Machine on an old-tech platform. Then I took the helm and every impression I had as a passenger was ratified in practice of driving.

OK, you all already know this. The Harley F150 is suddenly gone and I have a new 4 door to take some of the mileage load off the aging Cobra. Wife has an SVT Contour. We like distinctive Fords. Now if only Lincoln would wake up and stuff this 4 cam mill and a handling package into a Town Car LWB.....

Some questions:

1/ Anyone know the KN filter number that fits the factory box?

2/ I figure a MM driveshat, a Torsen diff in the pumpkin and maybe a chip will crisp this beast up just fine. But what's the sweet choice in swaybars?

3/ I hear about front tires wearing on the inside front. Has anyone figured out the optimal alignment specs for the Marauder? With an SLA and coil-overs, surely this can get dialed in just right. Hell, even on my Cobra's MacPhearson strut front suspension, I can get even wear across my front tires along with sharp turn-in and road feel. Ideas? Can't rotate tires on this. Imagine, a big 4 door where I can sit behind myself (6'3") that someone has gone to the trouble of balancing handling by equipping it with different size tires front and rear!

4/ What's this stuff about "real guages"? Are they Autometer or not?

I can just see where this is headed. How many different ways can you build your own Marauder?

Phil

Welcome to the fold Phil! I know you'll enjoy the car. To check on some of your questions, check out the FAQ's. There is also a parts listing in the Garage Forum I think. As for sway bars, Dennis Reinhart has one. Check the Vendor section for his site. The front tires do wear and can be rotated side to side only, the rear also, due to size differences. As for gauges, again, check the FAQ's or search on gauges. The oil pressure gauge, just like the one in you Cobra, and in my departed '99 Cobra, are, simply put, on and off gauges. If you have pressure, it reads a set amount. No pressure, reads 0. Ammeter sells a close look alike, and you'll need to order the sending unit also.

Again, Welcome!

I know Charlie Sheen test drove one in Santa Monica but I don't hink he bought one.

Did you buy the silver from Vista Mercury in Woodland Hills?

Valencia also has one.

Congrats, it's a great car.

I didn't get the girl's numbers. She wasn't local, passing through from Arizona, if I remember correctly. Saw her at a gas station just off the 101 freeway. In addition to her Mercury tattoo, she had a US flag on her right shoulderblade.

So, you track local inventory, Directed? Yup, I got the silver one from Vista. If LM dealers had more salesmen like Robert, they might make up for Ford's lack of promotion for the Marauder. He's the first salesman I met who knows as much about the car as I do. Drives like Parnelli Jones, and we yakked about Ford Panteras, GT40s, 351 Clevelands, L88 Vettes, early Rochester fuel injection and 4.6L 4 cam Ford mills. Thousand Oaks claims to have sold an MM to Sheen. BTW, that's a nice pony you have in your stable, that '69 Mach 1.

I drive by Vista several time a week. My kids go to school near there.

Charlie lives in Agoura, so it would make sense that he bought thecar in Thousand Oaks.

Lorenzo Lamas bought one too.

Thanks on the Mach 1. Bought the car when I was 16. 351 Windinsor, Shelby tri-Y headers, Shelby cam, 3:90 gears, Offenhauser intake manifold, Holly 850, MSD double ignition....Oh and 8 NOS injectors and 8 fuel injectors plummed into the Offenhauser.

I haven't driven the car in 10 years - just sitting in a garage.

Again, welcome..this is a great place to hang out and the folks are mighty friendly.

Nitrous in the Offy and a Shelby cam must sharpen up that Mach 1 considerably. But you haven't driven it in !0 YEARS????

My wife says Sheen married Denise Richards. Is that true? She's spotted both of them at the Gelsons in Calabasas. Next time she sees either one of them we'll look for the Marauder in the parking lot.

So this morning I was driving through Topanga Canyon at the now-pathetically-standard-I-don't-know-how-to-drive-my-SUV-so-I'm-afraid-I-might-get-flung-off-the-planet-on-a-curve-30mph and I got thumbs up from the Latino day workers waiting for jobs in the Village. As with my former Harley pickup, my Cobra and my Vette, they respond with enthusiasm to cars that have a decent exhaust note. Then at a light under Pacific Palisades on PCH, some guys in a lowered '64 Impala gave me the sly eye and an A-OK. Tatooed guy rolls down his window and asks to hear the motor revved. I give him a snort and he responds with some 60s glasspack music. We're all grins. I'd much rather be recognized by Latinos who know cars than by the gold-badge Calabasas Mercedes/Lexus crowd. Now I didn't notice that on the other side was a nervous BMW 330i with a Eruotrash-looking dude at the wheel. When the light changed I got off a crisp departure with a clear lane ahead. Suddenly, I catch the black Bavarian coming up on the right to try to cut me off so he could get around a drifting minivan. I stabbed the throttle just a bit and the MM surged to close the gap. Eurotrash dude pulls up close behind nearly kissing my bumper. He manages to get in front of the minivan just as we reach the next light. He's back on my right again. He looks at me, obviously pissed. Now I don't know which car is quicker, but he obviously thinks the Merc has no juice. He is revving his motor. Light turns greem and I stab the throttle, but he bogs as the Marauder starts eating asphalt. He's not catching me, but we're in a patrolled zone with a 45mph limit and I'm doing 70. I lift my foot and let my speed drift down as the 330i whizzes by, driver's finger extended with rage out the window. Well, you can spin anything up beyond a 100mph if you have time and clear road, I suppose. This kind of thing happens around the German marques with my Cobra and Corvette even when I drive them with my toes. Now it looks like I have another car that's resented by the luxo crowd for its refusal to yield to the automotive pecking order.

Minutes later, I pull into a parking garage in Santa Monica. The Marauder Music echos through the concrete maze. Up and up I go until I find a space next to a Maserati Coupe, the driver just getting out of his machine. He looks at me: "What the hell is that? I heard you coming way before I could see you. That car sounds even better than mine!" I asked him to fire his Maser up and left mine running. We played muffler music for about 3 minutes, had a good laugh and raised both hoods to admire the mills. Funny thing, the only other 4-door I have any interest in owning is a Maserati Quattroporte. I could have gone a little further down Ventura last night to place my order at Auto Gallery, but, well....the bank account is still a little light for that. I like distinctive cars and this seems to qualify.

That was my first morning commuting in my Marauder here in Los Angeles.
