View Full Version : Few problems related to ride and possibly suspension...

So recently I've had a few problems crop up in the car:

At and above almost precisely 70mph the car gets a slight shimmy feeling, from what feels like the rear end. It is noticable in the steering wheel, but it feels like my back is what is getting shaken more. This problem was at lower speeds before, but it's almost non-existant until 70mph now.

Also, about two to three weeks ago it seemed like the compressor for my air ride stopped pumping. Magically about a week ago, it's started working again. Strange part though is that the rear end will get to a slammed state in only a few hours of being parked now (between 1 and 4 pm today it went from regular height to practically bottomed out.)

An important part of this equation I do believe is that I just got new tires put on last Monday, after my old ones had almost no tread and 30,000 miles on them (a fair bit for W-rated tires).

A few days after the new tires is when the pump started working again, and immediately after the new tires is when the vibration went from any speed almost to 70, and any speed below that is like driving on a sheet of tacky glass. Luckily I'm never in a spot where I HAVE to drive over 65, so I don't just in case doing so would irritate the problem.

Any thoughts on this at all? I imagine the tires are somewhere in this equation, but I don't think that's all that's going on here.

Also on a different note, the car has begun to get a sort of thumping sensation whenever I back out of a parking space and have the wheel turned at an angle. I'm not at the lock of steering, but it's a feeling between a thump and a grinding, and it only happens in reverse. It seems to only be coming from the front, too.

I'm trying to get this stuff ironed out so I can get the problems fixed, I'd like this car to last me for years (hell, forever if it will) and I don't want something bad to happen to it from minor oversight or negligence.

Thanks in advance guys.

A lot of stuff your talking about realy needs to be seen or heard for a proper diagnostics other wise much of it will be a guessing game run down of possable problems to look for.
A good mechanic with dignostic skill's should be able to track it all down in short order once he feels and experiences it himself.
Do you remember the old Mida's comercial's when people call or try to explain in person the sounds to the guy behind the desk. He got a chuckle out of watching them try and make those sounds and explain it but until he got to look for it himself he had no clue.

Had the shimmy after installing new Goodyesr edge also, Took it back and had them re-ballanced. No more shimmy.

Ahh, that's a shame. :(

Oh well, I'm having a tune-up done for the car very soon, maybe I'll have them poke around and look for this other stuff too.

Everyone else is still welcome to chime in with ideas though, just for that random thought on what these issues could be.

+1 on the rebalance.
The change happened with new tire install - something is not right with what was just done. Check lug nuts. If tires are directional, are they installed to turn in the right direction?! This has happened to members on this site!

+1 The reason why the shimmy had changed may be simple your old tires may have had a shifted belt due to wear and the new tires shimmy because they are not balanced properly. As for the air bags and compressor may be unrelated.

Apparently the gremlins that live in the tight spaces of your car are not being fed properly. When they kick up on our car it is a good idea to get the car washed and go find some unsuspecting Toyota or Honda (being reasonable sure they won't eat you), and give the little guys a snack. A happy gremlin is usually content to sleep. Oh yeah +1 more on the tire rebalance.:)
