History Changing Superbird!
Take a look at this 1970 Ray Nichels built EPA Superbird. This one car changed automotive history and affected every car you now drive.
NASCAR icon Ray Nichels took a stock ’70 Superbird and transformed it into a muscle car that was capable of chasing a jet down a runway. The car was fitted with air sampling sensors and equipment to measure leaded fuel emissions, asbestos brake dust and tire wear as well as jet fuel emissions. It tested in the U.S. from May of 1972 until October of 1973. The data it collected helped bring and end to leaded fuel, asbestos brakes and the muscle car era. Then the car was parked. Six years later it was bought and restored back to factory appearance. In 2006 Brian Chaffee from E-Muscle helped his client buy the car and in a three restoration brought it back to the original color and specs that Ray Nichels built for the Environmental Protection Agency, air sampling equipment and all! It’s a remarkable story of research, history and a beautiful restoration. Check out this one of a kind winged wonder on Powerblock October 24 & 25.
