View Full Version : Not My Freaking Week

Bad enough the medical problems starting this last Sunday morning plus losing another week or two of pay by missing work after I almost had my nose above water level financially ,but now I've got car troubles today.
I was gonna take the Harley out for the first time in a week or two and get an oil filter and oil for it and change it before winter so I jumped in the P71 which I hadn't driven since last Thursday morning. The darn thing started throwing an air bag code,52,which upon calling the dealer means some kind of wiring issue with the passenger side air bag seat belt sensor.I called the dealer and found that out, while on the phone with them I tried hooking the seat belt to the empty seat and the light went out,it seems that if the light is on and it's throwing a code neither air bag would deploy in the event of an accident.I tried unhooking the belt and restowing it and the light stayed out so I figured maybe it was just a one time bug and drove off.Lucky me I thought (HA HA),the light never came back on.BUT,a mile later the car started idling like cr@p at a light and started to run rough, after a couple of blocks I got a flashing check engine light that finally went dark again.I pulled over to check for a code by shutting it off and hooking up the Scanalyzer and at first couldn't get anything as there was no check engine light. Finally the light lit and I got a PO305 code which the dealer told me when I called again means #5 cylinder not firing. So now it looks likes I've got a dead #5 COP.CR^P! Definitely not my week and a heck of a week to try to quit smoking! :mad2: :censor:
Has anyone local got a known good extra COP that'll fit a 2002 P71 and knows how to change it? :help:
After that I decided to come back home, leave the Harley sit and just do my laundry on probably the last good riding day of the year the way the weather's been here lately. :(
I just hope I don't fall down the darn stairs now making my trips to the basement.
Well,like I always say,"If it's got boobs,tubes,or wheels you'll have trouble with it"

Sorry to hear about your troubles! I have a extra COP but Im not anywhere near you. Changing the COP is simple. Its one bolt, just unbolt it, pull the COP out and pop the new one in. less then a minute to replace.
#5 cyl is the first cyl on the drivers side if your looking at the engine from the front. Thats actually the easiest to replace.

Search the web. I order these from ebay( http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270469431644&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT) for my 2001 CV. I'll see if they are up to par once they arrive. I just went ahead and purchased a whole set so I wouldn't come across the same problem again down the rode. Far as the install I have not a clue, just going shop around to get someone to do it for me.

So did you get the bike out?
I rode a couple of days ago and made a very disturbing discovery. The new gas formulation will gum up carbs in a matter of weeks! I parked it about 3 weeks ago and had it blocked in with the car so I couldn't get it out to ride until I got done with the car. I finally added carb cleaner to the tank and after a couple of hours of messing with it I finally got it running on all the cylinders. Finding the same thing happens with the leaf blowers and weedeaters. Dunno about the lawn mowers yet, but I ain't too happy since I just filled up the other bike and had intended to park it 'til next season. I guess I better change plans and fire up everything on at least a weekly basis. Maybe fill everything up with race gas for the winter?

Nope,I figured the way my luck was running maybe it was an omen I shouldn't ride, being full of blood thinner ain't a good thing if I was to get hit,in the car,or worse yet on the bike.
Try Chevron Techron in your gas in the proper amounts,it's the best carb/fuel injection cleaner available, they also use it in Chevron gasoline. I run a large bottle in the gas tanks of the cars after each oil change.Been doing that for some years now and I've never had dirty injectors, which reminds me to run some thru the fuel injected bagger too.

Won't Fuel Stabilizer help w/ the carbs getting gummed up so fast??
So, Uncle Lar; didja get that COP replaced on #5 on your CVPI?? What's a whole set of those cost anyway??

As a matter of fact Darren (Spectragod) sent me 3 via priority mail and wouldn't take anything for them or shipping and I got the P71 running like a champ again today.Heck,I celebrated by taking it to the car wash and getting it nice and clean again. :)
The Stabil fuel stabilizer is good for storage and keeping things from gumming up but draining the carb(s) on a bike after adding Stabil is an extra step that really helps.I used to buy old "metric" bikes when I was out of work, fix them up and resell them.i got lots of them dirt cheap in otherwise excellent condition because nobody used Stabil or drained the carbs. The dealers wanted over 4300 to rebuild the carbs just for labor and several hundred $ more for rebuild kits, after a few years of sitting the only way the bikes would run would be with the chokes on as the idle or low speed circuits would be totally gummed up and usually the floats were gummed up solid also.
I could remove, clean, set float heights, etc.,install and adjust a set of carbs on a Honda 750,550,or 400 or a 4 cylinder Gold Wing in a day easily and also throw in a new battery and rebuild the frozen brake caliper (because no one ever changed the brake fluid, hint hint) and have the bike test ridden and for sale by dinner time.I'll bet I had over 30 old CB750 sohc's,at least a dozen 550's and I sold a half dozen 76-78 CB400F's back to Japan, plus at least 10 4 cylinder Gold Wings. That's not counting various Kaw's,550's,a 3 cylinder 2 stroke 400 and a few Yamaha's.The 4 cylinder "naked" Gold Wings were superb bikes, like our MM's,give them good maintanence and they'd run forever, were reasonably fast and comfortable too, and so smooth and quiet. The first time I rode one I was shocked to find myself doing over 85 when I figured I was only doing 55 or so. I wish I had a decent one now for crummy weather riding or to ride to work and save the wear & tear and cleaning the crud off the bagger.Really detail cleaning a full dress Harley is a long days work so there's no way I'm gonna ride the bagger to work and ruin it.

As much as I love my MM it's the people here like Darren and many others who really make the site what it is,a lot of great people who don't hesitate to help when they can how ever they can.
Healthwise we'll see,I'm seeing a whole new bunch of doctors,my old primary care guy and old cardiologist just weren't communicating with me or each other or getting the job done.i know they're gonna take my thyroid out this winter because of what used to be known as a goiter,it's a big sucker situated so they can't even biopsy it,it's been interfering with swallowing and my breathing.I'll be getting the veins in my legs worked on to get my circulation back in the legs. The new cardiologist is concerned about the heart meds the old duo has had me on so I'm kind of taking it day by day and am sort of glad to be back at work, the job sucks, the stress is real bad, but having the insurance and pay is nice, you don't get nothing for nothing. So if I feel crummy sometimes I figure at least I'm around to feel crummy and to be able to bixxx about it.
Thanks again Darren!!!!
