View Full Version : Check Engine after fuel filter change?

I'm guessing air in the lines.
I have not run the car, I did an oil change and fuel filter change today. I am planning on leaving in the wee hours of the morning. Started the car and moved it and see "check engine" light on.
The only other thing I did was spray a couple of rusty clamps and managed to hose down the rear of the left manifold and the O2 sensor. I ran the car long enough to heat it up and get it smoking before I noticed what I did. I the wiped the area down with a towel.
Later on I noticed the light.
Any clues?
In the AM I will now be going to my buddy's shop to plug it in unless I hear something that makes sense.

I think so. the fat (crimped end) towards the front.

Its common for it to happen, especially if the filter isn't changed often. The light will most likely clear before you get to your buddy's shop.

I just bought it at 28K. The guy who owned it had the car serviced @ his local LM dealerships every 1500. I guess they didn't think it was too important.
With what I see going on in boats with the advent of ethanol, I change filters a lot!

Same thing happened to me the first time I changed the fuel filter in The Blackbird...I've changed it twice since, and also twice on Phoebe (who we bought used) and never had it happen again. Next time, turn the key on without starting the motor 2 or 3 times for a few seconds each.
It will go away on its own, or you can find a buddy with a code reader or ScanGauge and clear it.

If you depressurized the system to install the fuel filter, that's normal. Just clear the codes.
a local flaps can clear the CEL or the dealership (maybe for free, maybe not since they didn't change the filter). It's a normal occurance since the computer sensed a loss of fuel pressure. It will clear on it's own after a few driving cycles, which may take a while.

Hi All,
I don't have any manuals for my Panthers at all; IF I'm fixing to CHANGE my own Fuel Filter HOW do I "Depressurize" the Fuel System as someone on here said??? (Do I NEED to do that?!? What happens IF I just yank the old one off and slip the new one on?? -- with the 'Flow arrow' pointing the RIGHT way of course?? :D)
THANKS!! ANY and all TIPS or pointers will be greatly APPRECIATED! :o

The way I do it is: Tap the fuel pump shut off switch in the trunk, while the engine is running, and wait for the engine to die. Change fitler and reset switch, and let pump prime filter for about 10 seconds and start.

OK, GOOD DEAL! Sounds good! (HOW'd you "know" to do that?? Also; isn't there a special tool specifically for removing the old one?? or are there plastic tabs we need to break off or what have you?? OR is it old school type metal clamps that we bend on and off and reuse?? Obviously I've not even crawled under my car to LOOK at it all yet...live and learn deal here for sure!)
THANKS for the tips guys!! GOOD STUFF!!

I believe it has been said on here but thats just how I have always done it. And as far as tools, a screwdriver only to remove the clips. People on here say to push the clips inward but that has never worked for me. And try the best you can to not break the clips. The replacement one with the new filter are not the right ones. And the correct ones are not cheap.
Fuel filter clips - 2F1Z-9A317-AA (they're $7. Each.) Also available from Napa(alot cheaper than the dealer) but I don't remember or have that number saved.

my original clips broke, you can get a box of 10 from NAPA for a lil over a buck. just push in on the lines and pull the clips (they may break as i said mine did) then pull off the line. its really easy. ill try to find the P/N for the box of clips

what ImpalaSlayer said. this link will help with the removal/install. I had the pleasure of changing mine in a parking lot, while driving cross country on my way home the day after the purchase. ~ 28K on the clock. From the picture I am sure you can imagine the toll it took on the pump.

Dude! What the hell were they running in that car?! Mud?!
BTW, when I last changed mine, the clips broke, but I just secured the filter in place with zip ties, since that was the only option I had at the time. It's been holding solid ever since.

K-D makes a Ford fuel line tool that slides up inside the coupling, easy as pie.
The brown crap in the filter is the deposits left by MTBE enriched fuel. Now that we are getting ethanol it is being washed out. My Marauder's looked very similar to ROCOB's at 30,000 miles, I just decided to R&R it as a PM before heading to Atlanta.
Change your filters often! when you stop getting the brown crud you can go back to regular filter change intervals.
