About 3 weeks ago I was on my way home from an interview and I started hearing a ticking or vibration in the engine. I slowed down, checked the oil pressure and drove home the 5 miles left. I checked the oil and all looked good, but it started knocking until oil pressure built up. I revved it up to see if it would knock the entire time, and while under throttle it knocked but then stopped when the thorttle was released. I've been putting off installing a built bottom end for long enough.

I purchased a 03 Cobra shortblock from a member on SVTP. I'm going to clean it up, install new rings and bearings, then install it in the Marauder. I also plan to have Posi Performance port the blower and inlet, have my headers recoated, back the gears down to 4.10's, and put a 2.8" pulley on the S/C. I'll try to take some pics along the way, so far I'm 2 days in and still one or more away from pulling the old engine.

So thats whats been going on here. Stay tuned for the build. :D

Yeah its got some minor scratches, but nothing to worry about. I'm going to get it honed just to be safe. I'm also going to have the heads cleaned up and get a valve job.

Sure thing. I'm going to get the new engine on the stand tomorrow and start tearing into it. I'm having some issues with a few header bolts at the moment, so I might pull the heads before the shortblock.

ImpalaSlayer

my tuner was telling it would be very expensive to have some one freshen up the short block. like 1500-2k. i thought that seemed high. if it was any other vehical i would do it myself but its to expensive for me to do shoild i eff up LOL

Drewstang

The bearings and rings are not cheap, but an iron block is an iron block. The heads will be around $400 or so I'm sure.

I've been taking my time pulling the old engine and trans. I'll have some pics up later tonight. I've been fighting with the car every step of the way. I've got the driver's side head and header off, the driver's side motor mount is loose, the torque converter is seperated from the flywheel, and I have 4 more bellhousing bolts to remove. Plus the starter and passenger side motor mount then the engine should come out. I'm hoping to work on it some tonight, but I doubt I'll be able to touch it unti Friday afternoon. Just wanted to update you guys. Oh, and I dropped my S/C off to the porter on Monday. Next will be the lower intake and heads. :D

Engine is out, pics to come. Looks like sludge or lack of oil caused major issues. #7 was spun bad and probably the source of the knocking.

Ouch! At least you have the cobra sb! How did the oil pickup screen look?

Drewstang
12-08-2009, 01:05 PM
There were alot of metal shavings in the pickup tube and sludge in the bottom of the pan. I just picked up my supercharger case from Posi Performance and it looks great. The guy who is porting and polishing the heads and intake picked them up from the machine shop today and they should be ready in just a couple weeks.

I've got a ton of pics to post up, I can't find my USB cable lol.

Would it be worthwhile while you are doing rings and bearings to install a longer throw crank, like stroke it, at the same time to say 5.2? Not sure what the stroke limit is and still be able to fit the same oil pan.

I never saw a huge gain in power anywhere from a stroker kit, and I couldn't justify the additional cost. The money spent on a stroker kit could be spent on getting the heads and supercharger ported and polished.

I got the trans out today and I'll be draining it for delivery to the trans rebuilder. I'm also going to send the torque converter out to be reflashed to 3500 rpm instead of the 3k it is now.

I've got a ton of pics to upload, and our home internet is our from wind storms. I'm using my mobile modem for now.

It turns out a guy I've been doing some work for is a Wilwood dealer and we are going to put a kit together for my car. Todd at TCE has been very helpful and has sold me some parts to make it happen.

I'm also going to send the rear wheels off to Weldcraft for widening. I'm going to need all the rubber I can get under this thing.

I found a good deal on some Naake coil overs and I'll be installing them when we do the brake kit. All I need now is a rear addco sway bar, and a new Pioneer AVIC X910BT to be "done" with the car for now.

Nope. I might even re-paint the car this spring. Its done with its daily driver days and going to be a garage kept beast until my 2011 Mustang GT gets here.

Just a respray in black. There are a few dings and scratches I'd like to fix and just make it look nice again. 3 years of sitting under a water maple tree is not very kind to the paint. I'm going to have it fully detailed first, and if I'm not happy with it then I'll paint it.

I guess I'll update this for now. Engine will be almost 100% done next week. Shortblock is assembled and the shop is waiting on gaskets, head studs, and timing chains to arrive. Trans will be done this weekend as well minus the T/C which still needs to be shipped off. I've been watching for some good deals on "must have" parts while the car is down and found Naake coil overs and a complete Wilwood front brake setup. I also ordered a Ford Racing rear end cover, Addco rear sway bar, and TCI deep sump trans pan today. The wheels will be off to Weldcraft this week for widening for the final detail.

If all goes well, the car will be ready weeks before the Kentucky meet. :D

Almost all parts are here except the convertor, flexplate, headers, and misc other small parts. Assembly will begin this week. :D

Engine and trans are bolted down and in place. The crossmember had to drop to get the trans mount in. That was no fun at all, but with some prybars and BFH I got it out. I made sure to grind down the sides and apply liberal amounts of anti-seize. Driveshaft is bolted in, trans lines and starter are next. The headers, coolant lines, vaccum lines, then finally the supercharger assembly. If all goes well, it should run by Sunday, then a dyno appointment sometime late in the week.

Then, Doom's domination.

It runs, drives, and looks amazing after a full detail and buffing. I had to adjust the ride height and soften the front shocks a bit. My tune is scheduled for Sunday, so we'll see what she'll put down. I'll try to get it out tonight and snap some pics if the rain ends soon.
