View Full Version : Any interest in a honeycomb grille? Zack, any ideas?

I really love the Ford honeycomb grille. Any interest in fabricating one for our Marauders? Zack, have any ideas? Although a badgeless honeycomb would be ideal, I would take the P-71 honeycomb (or wherever it comes from) with the Ford logo in the middle if I had to . . .

Apparently the P-71 grille (or CV grille, or whatever it's really from) has a differently shaped perimeter piece, so we would have to "fill" a stock Marauder grille with honeycomb-like material.

I would supply one new Marauder grille, plus one new Ford honeycomb grille up for fabrication. Is there an easier way? Perhaps with different materials? And what about matching honeycomb inserts for the area below the bumper? Someone posted a Photoshop mock-up here somewhere, and boy did it look GREAT! Although I would prefer the Ford honeycomb material (or something like it) rather than the material used in the mock-up photo. Our grilles are inexpensive enough to think of them sort of like watch bands--a different grille for every occasion! Thanks for any input on this . . .

Shooter: THere should be an abundance of those grills in the junkyards of NY as the honeycomb is on just about every CV cab in NYC....

No flame, but I would pass on the honeycomb version as I don't wan to look like I drive a souped up cab. Then again if we can get into a sub-14 second six inch stretch version of the cab that NYC has been adopting, then you would be on to something!

Here's a reference photo of my 2003 Mercury Marauder on the left and a 1999 Ford P-71 Police Interceptor on the right with the honeycomb grille (although it's hard to see in this photo):

I think the honeycomb grille really adds to the stealth look I'm going for. Obviously, this cosmetic mod is subject to individual taste. Notice how the P-71 looks wider (and sleeker, IMO) next to the Marauder? Yeah, I know the P-71's been lowered a bit, has 50-series tires all around, and has only 17-inch rims, but I think the grille really enhances that look. Ever notice how your grille looks wider with the front emblem blacked out? Hopefully someone will see a logical path toward this project.

Oh, here's a much better picture of the honeycomb grille on the P-71:

NBC Shooter,
The appearance of the horizontal grille bars on the 2002-2004 Crown Victoria Sport would contribute to a widening, lowering effect more so, I think, than the honeycomb style.
Just my humble opinion.

I'm on this bandwagon, If anyone can fabricate one up I'd take it. If no one here takes a bite I'll try out side help.

I'd love a honeycomb grill! I think the honeycomb should be black or at lest gun metal gray IMO.

Think of all them Crown Vic guys, going to extreme trying to make their vics look like MM's.... Then we bust our butts to make our MM's look like run of the mill Vics.
Who laughs then?

honecomb grill on the CV's because of the widening/lowering look they have that Gilby was refering to. However one of the reasons they give that look to the front of the car is simply because they're also a different shape than our grills are. So as for me, I wouldn't be interested in any honeycomb grill that would be made to fit the MM, because it wouldn't give the car that same wider look as the CV has in front, since it would have to made a different shape in order to fit on the MM.

You could possibly use a Ford honeycomb truck grille as donor material to add to the MM grille shell. I think the truck grilles are larger than the CV grilles so you would have more honey comb to work with.

Zack: Thanks! You're THE MAN!

SouLRioT, Racerx88, . . . looking forward to your ideas, too!

By the way, the P-71 pictured above had its original Ford grille badge removed. There is still a "landing" area (mounting area) for the badge molded/embedded into the honeycomb grille. The owner replaced the stock badge with a smaller Ford badge and simply adhered it to the existing "landing" area (I think it was from the rear of a Ford F-150 or something). The intent of replacing with the smaller badge was to make the badge less prominent, and the car more stealthy.

Zack: If it's too much trouble to elminate the grille badge mounting area (to make a completely badgeless honeycomb grille), I would be okay with the solution of the smaller Ford badge option described above. Thanks again for your interest in this special project!

Check this out!
I can really make this if anyone wants one.
I will make the teeth a little longer and can have it painted.
The teeth are made of construction paper as it sits.

Seems like a pretty good idea! Now, who can find out if the MM front bumper cover will work on an '01+ CV?:D

I'm with marty here.

The honey comb grill on the CVs looks better than the horizontal bar grille IMO, but wouldn't look good on a Marauder t all.

The Honeycomb grille is utilitarian, and used on Taxis and Police cars. It looks good on CVs mostly because it lacks the big bars, and isn't chrome

Zack has too much time on his hands....

On the other hand, there are a bunch of us going to a "Detroit vs. The Ricers" on Sunday and this thing might look good roaring down the strip!

BillyGman,
Right on.
Further, I think thin horizontal grille bars, similar to the thickness of the stock MM grille, would impart the illusion of a lower stance and leaner appearance, compared to the thicker CV Sport grille.

Zack, I like the "teeth" look but in keeping with the holiday spirit maybe you should try to the the Jack O Lantern squared off teeth.....now that would be well......pretty stupid....:D

I have to disagree with you, The mustang has a honeycomb grill too and no one thinks that's utilitarian. I can't really say why I do, but I just like it.
