Why do some people in this world say they have a street car when they admit it travels to the track by trailer? Does this mean they take it on the street to race, but not drive it on the street?
I am starting to get this impression with G-Body owners that have ten second or faster cars. "Ya it's a street car." Then they said they trailer it to the track because the cannot afford 118 gas. If you can afford a car that cost $30,000 to make and a $5,000 trailer I would think one could afford to use racing fuel.
I guess there is a difference between a street car and a driven car. Does this make since? Do I finally get it? Or is this more of the same?
Whats even more funny is when a car is trailered to a street race, ya that's a street car.... :shake: Like I said I guess street car means it's used to street race, dispite wither it's ever driven on the street. Do I have it right this time? If so that's just really sad.

I always believed that a street car is a car that is registered and can be driven on the street legally. As long as it has mufflers, meets emission requirements for the year of the car and have wipers,lights,etc.... Then its a "street car" no matter how radical it may be.

Hope you are not losing alot of sleep over this issue. This question seems to bother you quite a bit. I agree with Paul's comment ^^^^ .... if it can be driven legally on the street .... its a "Street Car".

Many people who are serious about racing have enough sense to know they're likely to break something, so instead of bumminig a tow or leaving the car at the track or calling a wrecker (which is likely to tear up something) they have their own way home.
If it's registered, has the necessary lights and equipment to be street legal, and can be driven on the street then it's a street car.

'Street car' = street legal = registered and legal to drive on the street.
Dom, It sounds like this 'street' car thing is "stuck in your craw"...have you lost money street racing one of these cars??
I agree with you about trailering a 'street' car to a street race....what a joke!
If you take the time and effort to load it up on the trailer, then unload it for a race.......then go to the friggin' track and race!

One of the reasons I bought the Truck was to be able to trailer my Street Car to the track and piss Dom off.
Dom does make one point I've wondered about, and that is the need for "race gas" to drive your street car on the street. Tough to travel to long distance events I'd imagine.
Even E85 is not everywhere.... and you can run a lot of power with E85.....

The way my track states its "street class"
"ET Break - 8.00 and slower 1/8 mile - No Crosstalk
Street Cars ONLY - foot brake class, like Modified
License/insurance/registration/mufflers. Slicks allowed
This is a TRACK POINTS CLASS"

Race car, Street car, and driver is three different things Dom
Race = race
Street = show, race, weekend cruiser, anything mostly street legal, trailered in case of break down, or trailered right after a detail for a show.
Driver = Cars like yours.

That's an easy one, cause they can! Mine don't have 135K on it in 1/4 mile passes for sure although there are plenty of miles on it from the track, 1/4 mile at a time. But its legal, got all the State required safety equipment, lights, wipers, registration, insurance and often takes long trips.
Why not be able to drive it on the highway? If you can't drive it anywhere you want to go, why have it? Otherwise its mostly just taking up space.
I'm sure that fits most all the cars on here.

It just seems to me they lose their purpose as a "car". It's no longer used for transportation, just competition.
Glenn, I guess you have by definition a street car, unless the car never sees the street. It looks more like a race car, but I believe you have mentioned you drive your car, but when it comes time to beat on it at the track you trailer it.
Joe, I haven't ever raced a car that has come off of a trailer, but I've been approached at a track or two.
I personally have never trailered the car or towed it with one exception when I broke the rear end... while crusing down Lake Shore Drive. The faster a car is the more it seems necessary to trailer the car to the track. The thing is I am always hard on the car, always and it never fails except when I blow a tube out of the blower about once a month. Nothing a screw driver and five minutes cannot fix... literally.
I don't know anyone with a nine second car or even 11 second car that drives them. Mine is just a few gallons of racing fuel away from being an 11 second car and I still drive it everywhere and park it in the street. I am not saying I am better than anyone, it just seems like even if a car is fast it can still be used and there isn't a need for a trailer. Then again 12 second cars always show up at tracks, but I have yet to meet anyone with a 12 second or 11 second daily driver. Maybe in other parts of the country, but certianly not here in the Midwest.
This is the last time I feel a need to touch on the subject of a "street car" but I'm glad we did.
Justbob, you laid it out in words very well.
Everyone elses thoughts were helpful too. I was almost positive I would be bashed for beating a dead horse (not that I would care) but this was helpful. I wonder if there is any event I can go to for Fastest Daily Driver, because there are a ton of street car events... if you wanna call them that.
So I guess we have. Race Cars, Street Cars and Daily Driven cars. Although the subject of a street car seems very shady.

There are venues out there like the NMRA for example that hold an actual "True Street" class. The vehicles must have the required license, insurance, working lights, wipers, etc. These must take a 30 mile drive, city-highway, then come back to the pits, change tires and run. No lifting the hoods or nothing.
Mind you that these are not what you would call everyday Daily drivers but are street legal and can make the circuit then make 3 passes down the track. I'm sure some are familiar with it. If the car can't make it on the circuit drive, then its DQ'd. That's basically the essence of a street car.
Trailoring is one thing. Being able to safely get the car back home if it does break has little do with it. If you don't break it in competition and can back that puppy off the trailer, put street rubber back on it then drive it back home 50, 100, 500 miles then I believe thats a street car.
I'm certain Glenn's car can do that as can most.
That's about a simple as I can make. Hope that makes sense.

Haha a street car to me, can be driven 3 hours on the highway without any reliability issues, extreme fuel consumption, or major discomfort to the driver.
Everyone has a different definition.

I agree.
That's cool. So Glenn's 11 second car fits in that category as does my 11 second Cougar. The last trip I took with it was 5+ hours each way, with AC running part of the time, stereo on, 21+ MPG.

Exactly, and why is that bad?
You may not like drag racing as much as the next guys doesnt like the same bands as you.
Why do guys buy guitars and never play them?
The point im trying to make is most guys with drag cars dont need it to be a "street car" Because they are normally towing it with a $45k truck and most likely has a real nice car as their "street car" (daily driver)
So consider it a hobby. Just like anything else. Ive never as long as ive been on here heard glenn or marty gloat that their car is the fastest street car or anything like that. So, to me, trying to define it is pointless.
If it was a instance of you racing against someone else in a "street class" then the rules are there already in place. No need to question that either.

My barely 12 sec. car gets driven everyday that it is dry and drives no different than in stock form. This is because I would rather drive something else to rack miles for work, can't stand the thought of cleaning it, and I work construction and get sick of plugging holes in expensive tires and mud bogging.
If I had a truck and trailer, that would be the only way i would go to the track considering its two hours away.
So I guess I would say, I can and do very long distance trips across the country, but for normal wear and tear, forget it.

This makes my head hurt, not everyone has to do things exactly the way you do. If some guy has a street car that he trailers to events/races etc. more power to him, then when he breaks something he doesn't have to call for help. If I had the money for a trailer you best believe I'd pull the car to the track every time.
