Hi guys,
I'm getting pretty heavy smoke when I get up to around 5000 rpm.
No smoke on startup or normal driving. Only when I'm on it hard.
Been reading about oil catch cans to stop the oil from coming in through the PCV system.
Anyone tried these? Do they work?
Thanks.

I just got one for my Ram truck. Too early to give you and answer on the performance of the unit.

I use on on my heavily boosted application and it works very well.

The search function is your friend. Lots of info on the subject.

I tried that first.
Maybe I'm missing something, but when I search for oil catch can, I get nothing.
Are there some instructions on how to use the search tool more effectively?

Are you boosted? If not then I would be worried about why you are getting so much crank case pressure, rather than how to bandaid it.

No mods at all. All stock.
You think it could be something else?
I took the hose off from my pcv to the intake, and it's pretty full of oil.

That's weird, just tried again, and got the same result.

A PCV without some sort of vapor separator is always going to use SOME oil but if you are noticing oil consumption and smoking like you describe, on an unmodified engine (I'm sure Ford did enough homework to ensure this wasn't supposed to be the case), you could be looking at excess crankcase pressure due to blowby. It is common with engines with really worn out rings, to get a lot of blow by through the PCV.

I hope it's not that. I guess I'll try a compression test, and see what I find. Thanks.

No, the search function stinks. That's why there are so many threads asking the same question over and over. Not your fault.

I just searched "butt" and got 988 hits, so there must be that many meaningful threads on the subject, right?

You are right, sir. EVERY word that comes out of my mouth, and some that don't, are meaningful. :P

Well, I solved my smoke problem.
It was the PCV valve! I replaced it with a new one, and no more smoke.
I guess I can hold off on the catch can.
Funny though, the old part didn't seem too bad, but I guess it wasn't sealing well enough.

Glad your problem is solved, but you are derailing the blatant derailment of your thread.
Imagine that.

As for the search function. What is wrong with human interaction (internet web style) instead of "The Search Function"? As for the main question. I am sorry but I can not help.
