This evening I discovered a deep 12 inch long scratch in one of my rear rims. Is there any way to fill in the damage to the clear coat and does anyone know what the cost for a new rear rim is? Thanks for any advice you may have.

Rims are pricey, I believe about $585 or so a piece from the dealer. There are shops that can fix you up good as new though too for a lot less. I dinged one of mine just before Ennis and had it repaired for about $125.00. I used a local shop to do the work, but I have seen some places advertise their services in Autoweek.

FWIW .....
List price from Ford is $559 but you may be able to get a deal from you dealership in the $400 range; especially if you're on good terms with the parts counter. *Know from personal experience.

Here's another alternative - AAA Rims (http://www.aaarims.com/index.html) ... $375 for the MM rim, however, they have an exchange option ( though the max' appears to be a $45 credit ). *Haven't done any business with the folks and don't have a vested interest; have talked to 'em on the telephone and they sounded like straight-shooters.

And ... if you go the purchase route, let me know; may be able to help defer the cost by buying the damaged rim. *Would be used as my in-the-trunk spare.

Thanks for the advice. I will start with a visit to the local dealer tomorrow and see what they can do for me first. I will post the results of that visit as soon as possible.

Is it just the clearcoat or right into the aluminum?

If just the clear coat it's an easy fix you can do yourself

This problem comes up all the time with aluminum wheels on older casr, esp. Corvettes. I'd browse Hemmings.com to see whether there is a shop who can provide this repair service. It's got to be less $$ than a new wheel.

I have several scratches in the clear coat, how do I fix it myself?

My dealer looked at the wheel today and stated that the damage is down to the aluminum and can not be repaired. The service manager quoted a new rim at $420.00 plus tax and $20.00 to mount a tire on it. I may just file a claim with my insurance company and pay the deductible to have the rim replaced. I would like to hear any other suggestions that anyone may have.

$420? That's gay. Call one of the supporting dealers on this site, there's a couple. Any of which will give you a steep discount on the replacement rim.

CJOHNSON - I would think twice about making a claim with your insurance company. Three claims some companies drop you or raise your preimum. No matter how small or large the claim, a claim is a claim. I would look into Logan's sugestion.

Well that's not a bad price. The wheel retails for $559.23. He is giving you a 25% discount. I give a 30% discount which would be $399.45 but the frieght would be at least $20.00 so I would go for the deal you're getting. RAY

the clearcoat is paint. you can touch it up and polish it just the same as the clearcoat on the body.
