I stopped in for an oil change at the Ford dealer today and noticed that my tires are almost completely worn. The service manager said that he's heard that BFG is no longer making KDWs in 245/55 and that once the existing inventory is gone they're done. Has anyone else heard this?

Most of us have gotten tired of BFG's projections of when the OEM 245/55/18 would be available and found something else. I put GoodYear Eagle F1 GS-D3 255/55/18s on the rear back in March 2009. No problems with TC and they made the trip to Louisville, KY (4th Annual MM Regional) and to Indianapolis, IN (Marauderville 7) this year.

On the stock rear wheels? You can go all the way up to 285/50/18 on the rear wheels if you don't have traction control. Some of us have.

Not the same as our OEMs. Different tire and different performance rating as I understand the situation.
BFGoodrich Radial T/A 255/55/18 Service 102T are standard OEM on the 2010 Camaro LT. Its a $95.00 tire on special at $79.00 and doesn't have the same performance rating as the MM OEM BGF g-Force T/A. I think that the Camaro tire is limited to 118 MPH. Camaro SS gets a different tire. 20" too.

Tire Rack is showing our OEM 245/55/18 KDWS g-Force T/A in stock for $149.00.

with all due respect and I mean that I have a question. after reading this forum for about 5 months I have noticed a fierce allegiance to the OEM tire on our cars. why is that? my personal experience with friends around me that insist on keeping the OEM tires on the cars they drive has been to notice that those friends really know very little about tires and less about mechanical things. so what gives fellas, why the hoopla over the stock tire?

You may be misinterpreting what you have been reading. ;)
Many of the owners here would have preferred to have a greater variety in tire selection. However, for the first couple of years, the OEM BFG was the only tire manufacturer that offered the 245/55/18 rears for the MM. This specific size is important to those MMs equipped with traction control since the size differential tolerance between the fronts and rears must be maintained within a very narrow band (~ 3-6%). Otherwise, the T/C acts up and thinks the rear wheels are slipping. Not a problem (or less of a problem) for owners of the '03 300a early build MMs since they didn't have T/C.
As rear tires became harder to find, many owners started looking at options and other various combinations of tires with the right size difference and performance characteristics. There were not many options and there still aren't. Search on "Tire Matrix" and you will see.
The 255/55/18 size is about as wide & tall as you can go and stay within the T/C tolerance of the stock front size. Others say that the 255/55 is about as wide as you can go "safely" on the stock 8" rims. However, several members are running 265-285s on stock rims. I'll stick with the 255/55 max. I am current wearing the 255/55/18 GoodYear Eagle F1 GS-D3s on the rear. Nitto, Kumho and some others also offer that size.
Bottomline: I don't think you are seeing a fierce loyalty to the OEM BFGs other than they happen to be one of the very few combos that work on the MMs with T/C.

I'm using Nitto 555 265/50/18's on the rear of mine right now, almost the same height as stock, and a touch wider. Nitto 555's on the front as well, stock sizes.
The car handled better in the corners/quick lane changes with the BFG's. FWIW.

You must have been reading a different forum. I thought I was the only one around here that actually prefered the KDWS. I am the odd guy out, but wanted to give an opinion from the other side to help you make your decision based on what you are looking for in a tire. I'm not too happy about the tread wear, but the stiff sidewalls make up for that in my book. I bought new Kumhos and tried them and went out the next day and bought more BFGs. I was not pleased with their sidewall flex.
The stock camaro tires are Radial T/As in the same size as our KDWs. That is NOT a performance tire in any way, unless you upgraded from the orig tires on a model T.

good point about the traction control and varying tire diameter. leave it to OEM to put oddball tires on every vehicle they can.

I was really surprised to learn what an unusual size rear tire Mercury selected for the vehicle. I just went with a new set of BFG KDWS from Tire Rack.
Great to hear that different widths will fit on the rear wheels. I imagine it will open up some additional options for the next set.

+1
I just bought set of rear KDWS. I just like the stock look, and the handling isn't poor. Though if they're not in stock by the time the front and rears have been worn down, I might try something different.

search "Camaro spec review" to find my review of the Camaro spec tires. The camaro tires are a $100 crap BFG tire that are not even close to a KDW in terms of construction or handling. They are the same size, that is about all they have in common with our stock tire. They are useable if you can't spring for anything better (I am running them as a temporary set of rears)
The KDWs is an excellent handling tire on our cars, my only issue with them was the wear of the rears. The fronts I get about 20k miles to and they wear perfectly evenly, which is about all I would expect from a performance tire.

I will most likely go back to the KDWS after I wear out the wagon wheels I'm running now; SUV tires Dunlop SP5000 255 55 18.
Besides the sidewall flex on cornering, I don't like the feeling of the taller tires on the high end.
Makes the car less squirly when it is wet and the winds are heavy with the correct tire.

I still like the look and handling of the OEM tires. I'm only on my second set at 68K miles. I got 42K on my first rears and now have 26K on the second set - they look about half shot. I'll still get the OEMs if I can find them.

I also like the look and handling of the OEMs. Am wearing GoodYer Eagle F1 DS-G3s on the rear now 'cause the OEMs were nowhere to be found back in March. Looks like Tire Rack has 'em in stock again.
You'll have to tell me your secret on tire wear. I tend to be a little spirited on the starts and corners. :D I am now on my 4th set of rears. The OEMs on the first 3 sets only got 21K, 18K, and 21K. Probably could have pushed the 2nd set to 21K also; but swapped 'em out a tad early to make the trip to MV IV. I have about 7K on the GoodYears now.

I recently bought snow tires for my annual Christmas trek up north and noticed that my dealer (Discount Tire) had the 245/55's in stock. I said that I thought they were discontinued.
His reply was that BFG makes a run of x-thousand and then waits for them to sell out and then fits in the next run when it's convenient for them to do so.
Sooooo, if you want 'em and see 'em get 'em. :woohoo:
