Wednesday I pulled my rear apart to take care of a howling loud whine and a bad pinion seal leak. Today my rear guy came to my shop and we went through everything.. All new bearings, races, seals and the set of axles I had purchased off a member recently (Thanks!)
Turned out my car had the typical axle wear and that was the cause for the whine and a vibration I picked up. My ring and pinion were perfect and there were no other signs of problems besides the axle. 2 hours labor putting everything back together and no more whine and no more vibration. In fact it sounds too quiet!
Few tips.... heat works well in popping off the ABS rings off your old axles onto the new ones, when changing axle bearings, be sure to have the right puller or it will be hell to pull them out. The improved S spring is still a huge PITA but 3 people armed with a screw driver, vice grips, hammer and drift will make it seem much easier then it is. I used RP gear oil and be sure to pick up a hand pump because there is hardly any room to pour the oil in the diff. Make sure you pick up 3 quarts, 2 1/2 is what it takes to fill.

Paul I'm really glad that Proctologist Ms.D recommended was able to help you out:up: Hey did your car axle situation ever resolve itself?

By renting the right puller and slap hammer. They popped right out with 5 slaps of the hammer and installed easily with a oversize socket.
All rears in my household are fine sir...:D

How many miles on your original rear axles?
Did you change the differential gear oil previously?
Thanks
Jim
PS My MM was built Dec 2, 2002 before the axle solution (Jan 2003).

Mine howled during my test drive...Needless to say, I bought the car when it was on a rack with the axles out of it.

I have 67K on the original axles and I've changed the gear oil twice before the axle swap.
I was picking up weird noise, vibration and a whine. That was the reason behind pulling the rear apart this time. Along with a leaking pinion seal but that could have waited. The noise was why I needed to get this done.
Ill post pics of the axles.

My original axles made it 75K miles.

Glad you got it fixed. I won't have the 4.10s in until next week sometime cause I need to pick up some new inner/outer bearings and cups for the diff and get a shop to press them for me.
Last time my axles were out (around July/August) they were in really good shape so I'm going to keep them. I'll take my stock diff, rebuild it for 31-spline and get some 31-spline CV axles down the road.

I been stowing money away for a full exhaust set-up and tuning. Buying a diff isn't on my wish list til I blow this one up.

There are no 31 spline gears to fit the OEM differential. You will need to use a new 31 spline diff. case. A loaded 31 spline from Ford Racing is less than $300.
