Don't know why, but my tranny is acting up. Was just cruising on my way home from work. Felt it surge/slip a couple times shifting into 3rd and OD, nothing felt real weird.

Got about 3 miles from home it just stopped shifting into 3rd period. No degradation in the shift quality, no funky noises, heat was stuck just under 150° like always. Fluid level is perfect, smells sweet, it's nice and red. Just stuck in second and still does the 1-2 shift fine.

My tranny is equipped with the Art Carr stage 2 kit, 3k PI TC, Deep trans pan, and the giant cooler that Reinhart sells.

WTF? Servo or something weird? Don't know my ass from my elbow as far automatic transmission go.

What you discribed is exactly what I had happen last year when my trans went out...

I bought my MM in 2006 (used) and had to put in a new trans a few days after I bought it... I got it cheap from a used car dealer, so it was not that big of a deal.

I put a Ford OEM reman trans in the car for about $1800 parts and $300 labor.

That trans failed Sept. 2008 and it was replaced FREE OF CHARGE since it was under the 3yr/ 36k warranty from FORD.

When it went out BOTH times it was the same as you explained, no degradation... just all of the sudden no 3rd gear. I drove home the first time in 2nd and the second time I just had it towed. I had it diagnosed at a trans shop, they checked line pressure and could see what was wrong.

So far no trouble with the latest trans, I have had it about 25k miles and jsut over a year... oh, and by the way it is for sale if you end up needing one. $600 local or $750 shipped. (Balance of FORD's 3yr 100K warranty!)

Good luck,

-John

After 4 rebuilds, they got it right. Still dont know what went wrong.

Ug, just what I was afraid of....:(

Going to check with a shop I have used before and see what they say. I want to retain use of the performance items from the transmission. Maybe a rebuild in order, nothing fancy. It's the wrong time of year for this ish.

Yeah, I think a reputable shop would let you have all your perfomace parts added into the rebuild...J MOD it if you havent already.

Don't need to, I am pretty sure that they Art Carr Stage 2 kit comes with a modified valve body. I haven't been able to find a description of what actually is in the stage 2 kit but would like to retain what ever the performance stuff is. Valve body, going to reuse my 3k TC etc...

Does anyone know a good source for performance parts for the guts? I am assuming I will need to replace some of the gears or clutches, etc. I want to do it locally but want the shop put some better than stock stuff in.

Anything you guys would definitely recommend? The obvious will be the gears, clutches, bands, but what about springs and solenoids? I wonder if cryo treating the new gears and such would help in any way.
