View Full Version : Rear height is different from left to right

Just noticed that my rear right side is sitting noticebly higher than my rear left side. I changed rear tires 2 weeks ago, but I didn't notice the height difference until yesterday. I did jack the front of the car up without turning the air ride system off, not sure if it mattered. Anyways, I'm clueless.......

me too, it happens to me all the time, no matter what side I jack up, they do have self leveling, but it takes a little time, the air ride has to cycle first.

Turning the air suspension off is only necessary if the rear of the car is being lifted. I've heard others say that theirs is slightly uneven in the past but:
Are you SURE the rear tires are both the same size?
It's possible you have a defective air bag or solenoid on one side.
Try bouncing the rear of the car a few times...maybe a sticking shock?

Measure at the wheel arches with the car running and report back. If it's less than an inch it's "normal" even though I don't like it either. Our rear air ride system feeds both air bags from the same line, the air bags do not get the pressure regulated individually. Any difference in construction from one air bag to another (it's just a rubber bladder crimped around both plastic ends) is going to show up as side to side ride height variance. I had 3/4" difference, low on the drivers side, with the car running when I got it (23k miles). I bought another set of used, low mile air bags and swapped them around until I got the minimal deviation side to side. It's still almost a half inch off. Was it worth the effort for like 1/4" improvement, probably not, but stuff like this drives me crazy. My front left is a half inch lower than my front right. I have built old classic cars that sit more level than this but that's life.
That's build quality for ya

on mine when running seems fine ...but it also depends on were i park somtimes one side is really hi . if i find a nice level area they look dead on..

Ok so I left the air ride off for a couple days and the left side being the side that sits lower was getting kind of close to the tire while the right side was still sittin up high, when I turned the air ride back on the left side just barely rised up. Does this sound like a bad air bag or solenoid?

Deflate the air bags completely first. then turn the system back on and see what happens. Sometimes it just needs a complete reset.

How does one deflate the airbags completely?

Duh. By letting out the air.
Sorry. I had to say it. And I too do not know the answer to your question. I hope you get it fixed.

I have the same issue, at first i thought it was car frame is bent. but than again is Ford engineering.

Lift the rear and put it on jack stands (ofcourse turn off the suspension switch first). pop off the ride height sensor arm from the bracket and pull it down, wait a few seconds and the air bags will begins to drain. once the car is resting (hopefully not on your head) then you reconnect the arm, take the car off the stands and put it on the ground, turn on switch and turn on the car.

What does the ride height sensor arm look like? where exactly should I be looking for it at with the car jacked up?

Is the sensor inside the airbag or out side?
