there is an article in the latest issue of muscle mustangs and fast fords proving that LTs are worth 30hp OVER shorties. the test was done on an 00 gt with a d1sc and twisted wedge heads. the test was done at DEZ racing and no other changes were made to the car besides the different headers. there baseline was 549hp 465tq and there numbers after the kooks lts were added were 579hp 476tq.

just saying.......

Man, I looked everywhere for my MM&FF and I can't find the January issue. I could swear I got it. What is on the cover and when did you get yours? I got to read it before commenting. I assume they have a dyno chart with the article?

Ok, whose slightly altered quote is this?

I would have thought the LTs running with a d1sc would have produced about 30 HP over shorties starting with a base of 549 HP. This is apparently a strong built motor. Exhaust becomes more critical when you start pushing 500 and over HP. But, I will look forward to reading the article and will comment when I get it.

Thanks,

Glenn Ford :burnout:

Or pass smog and visual inspection or live in Cali go shorties! unless you got a friend of a friend.

I believe I own a set of headers that were removed from this vehicle.

If you can spend thousands on your car you can find a tech that'll do it for beer money. :)

OK, read the article - not a completely fair comparision because MM&FF also replaced the stock 2 1/2" - "X" pipe with a 3" "X" crossover pipe. In addition, the Kooks headers were custom built "stepped headers" and not their normal offering. But, when you are pushing 550 - 600+ HP the LTs are needed to pull the high volume of exhaust gases out of the engine especially with a SC.

Shorties are just a cheaper option especially with a moderately powered SC running 380 to 480 HP. Above that level you are pushing a high level built forged engine that can very effectively use LTs to get the exhaust gases out of the engine especially with hi-flow heads, intake and cams that were used in the article.

Also, it is interesting to note that you can still record good 1/4 mile numbers with just the shorties and a moderate SC engine. If Merc is still running his shorties, he has the highest powered built stroked 4.6 engine running shorties and a 11.67 1/4 mile. I guess I'm second with my 11.80. Also, the LTs did not make the 50-60 HP that some people claim to have realized.

I dunno, if they added 30 hp over shorties and the shorties added 20 hp over stock, isn't that 50 hp over stock?

Your right Glenn. Once you start pushing over 500 RWHP long tubes will produce more power.
