Do you have a tune for it? Don't do it unless you have the tune to put in for 4.10s. If you do and you don't plan on supercharging later, you'll love them! It really helps wake her up. I can't really tell you about gas mileage difference. I'm always in city stop and go traffic. Here, Tommy at Sparta (A sponsor here) is a good guy with good products:

You should get the install pack too. New bearings, races, etc. Ask him! 2007VistaBlueGT (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/member.php?u=10898)

I always see the different packs (and I know I've asked before, but...)
which one of those install packs is most suitable for a high-mileage replacement? I'm planning on having the trak-lok rebuilt if I ever get around to doing this, I'm well into the land of one-wheelie-peelies. :(

127k on mine, I did the M-4210-C which has the axle bearing also. Might as well do it all and do it right!

Also recommend getting Redline 75w140 gear oil. Doesn't need the friction modifier additive.

exactly what I was thinking, as I don't plan on (and seriously hope I don't have to) opening that thing again for a long time after I do it.

I deliberated long and hard relative to going from 3:55 to the 4:10’s gears or some were in between.
First installed Lido’s Tune (91 octane) then installed the 4:10s.
My impressions:
Improved the acceleration in stop & go situations. Great in the twistys :D
Plan on a 500RPM increase for highway driving at your normal cruising speeds
Decrease of the Gas (average) mileage by 1.5 MPG.
If I had to do it over again would choose 3:90 for my driving conditions
Install with new bearing kits and Synthetic oil…do not forget the limited slip additive
Good Luck

Besides a tune, the 4.10's are a BIG upgrade for this 4,000 lb beast we have. Much improved off the line. You'll run about 200RPM higher at 65-70Mph and will lose about 1MPG. It's a good trade off.
The Ford 4.10's are listed in the Ford Racing Parts catalog. Use your favorite internet search engine to locate the catalog. You can also find them on eBay.
Talk to Mustang owners and join one of the many Mustang message boards to locate a reputable shop in your area.

I debated over going to the 4:10's on my MM, but after having a long conversation with Steve Babcock, he told me they originally wanted 3:73's or 4:10's. The bean counters wouldn't go for it. Having a conversation with Lidio convinced me that 4:10's were the best way to go. I've got to tell you, the tune and the gears really woke up the car's driveability.

My guy charged $200.00. Original price was $250.00 but the install went so easy he knocked down the price.

4:10s are great in the MM. Highway rpms increase about 200 and gas mileage may drop 1 mpg. IMO going with anything else is just a waste of time and money for very little return.

+1 Glenn nailed it. 4:10 gears and a tune are prolly the best "first step" mods you can make to a stock Maruader. Night and day difference before and after.

Going with the girdle in the diff. cover is a good idea. I went with the Ford Racing cover, it's about $250 retail.
Have never used Royal Purple gear oil. IMO, fastblackmerc's suggestion is a good one, Redline 75w140 gear oil. Doesn't need the friction modifier additive.

While it isn't *necessary* to upgrade the rear cover, since you're going to be in there anyway, installing a girdle and stud kit is a good idea. I have the T/A Performance ones on my cars. T/A is the company that manufactures them for Ford Racing.
Yes, Royal Purple is excellent, as is Motorcraft synthetic 75W-140.

frdwrch put Motorcraft synthetic 75W-140 in mine, as well as the friction modifier, and I've been pleased with the results.

I love my 4.10s... For around town this is the best with a tune... Won't loose much MPG around town, but will loose a couple on the road... If I were driving mainly on the road, 3.55s would be better. I dont; knw about 3.90s..

Do it right, if you do it:
1) Installation by a professional shop
2) Quality gears, bearings, races, seals
3) 31 spline axles
4) 31 spline differential (OEM Ford clutch is just OK) Detroit Locker-much better
5) Girdle cover & cap studs
6) Any brand synthetic oil is fine-I used Wal-Mark's best
7) New performance driveshaft
8) Rear lube & extension housing mod
9) New tune with 4.10 speedo mod included
cost? ~$3,000 ?
