View Full Version : Wear pattern on Nitto 420s

I put 420s on the MM just before going to the Louisville meet, so they had maybe 6K on them when I took them off to put steelies plus snows on two weeks ago.

My right rear 420s had center wear reminiscent of the BFGs. Enough that it was readily evident. Put a straightedge on the tire, and it dips 2+/32nds in the center. Left tire looks exactly correct with no odd wear pattern. Tires are kept at 34 psi and checked at least monthly. They were not rotated side-to-side during the 6K.

The question: How do yours wear? Could the squirm that was the purported problem with the BFGs be happening on the 420s in one rotational direction only? Guess I'll answer that next year when they go back on, but on opposite sides.

Except for this, I liked the 420s. Traction is great, wet or dry they launch hard. Hell, I liked the BFGs except for the poor wear on the rears, and have only now wore out the original BFGs on the front after 48K and will have to get new tires in the spring. If you tell me yours wear funny, I don't know what to get for the fronts.

As an aside, my MM is not a daily driver, and is mainly used on long trips. Tire pressures checked religiously prior to leaving town. I'm not a particularly aggressive driver, although my wife may differ.

I look forward to any comments.

WTF? DUDE UR SCARING ME I JUST BOUGHT MINE a week ago?

did you check the DOT, when is the tire made? sometime if the tire is made long time ago that should case the tire wear very quickly.

if they sold tires with old DOT, u could take it back and they should give u a new set, before buy any tires make sure the DOT are for this year. i bought mine my DOT read it was made 3 months ago.. Go back to ur tire shop .

Tires were good dates. When I bought them in April, I told the tire shop I would be checking, and would not accept out-of-date tires.

Not sure the tire shop will be much help. I live in a small town, and had to special order them. He does not normally handle Nittos. Besides, I can just hear the excuses. "You run too much/too little air" etc.

I have NITTOS on my MM and the wifes. I've been running mine for about a year now with no problems and no uneven tread wear. Maybe you just got a bad tire? Both of our MM's are daily drivers, she drives about 80 miles a day with hers and I go about 5 round trip.

I have Nitto 420s all around and haven't had any wear issues. You may have just bad luck and picked up a defective tire.

I noticed that with my stock BFG's the right will wear faster because right turns are sharper and it dont take much to spin the right while your turning right.

my stock bfg's did that but not the Nitto's. i assumed the middle tread wearing faster then the edges was from fast starts and burnouts. makes sense that the inside of the tire would pull out in a brakestand or somthing due to centrifugal force. ive had my Nitto's on for over a year now the wear like steel still have plenty of good tread.
