Hey guys, it's been a while since I posted on here. I sold me marauder to my father in law ( so it's still in the family). But he's having an issue passing emmissions here in ct.
The emmissions sensors keep resetting everytime you turn the car off. It's been in the shop for over a week and they still cannot figure out the problem. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas what could be causing this.
The repair place has tried it both with the Reinhart tune and the stock tune. No difference. When they plug in the obdii tool, it just keeps saying sensors not ready. Multiple drive cycles have occured and multiple shops and no one can figure it out. He cab get a 2 year pass, but then in 2 years he'll have the same issue.
Any ideas are appreciated!!

It doesn't matter whose tune is in it. It is merely in reset mode and untill the driveability test mode is 100% completed, it will not be ready for test. I've seen some finicky cars requiring up to 300 miles of different styles of driving to complete the obd11 checklist. Did you have any pending codes (stored and waiting for a second problem) prior to this? What did the shop(s) do? Just read and erase?

When he first "failed" emmissions, they told him to drive it a bit more. They said come back after 2 tanks of gas, which he did. Same issue, they told him to try another tank and really drive it hard on the highway. Nothing. He did have an engine light at one point, p0456, which was a small air leak in the intake which was repaired. But sensors still didn't initialize.
They said that everytime they plug in the obdii it shoes the sensors have been completely reset.
He's also driven around 1000 miles trying to go through the cycle.

The DR tune probably turns off the rear O2 sensors, most performance tunes do this. The stock tune may get everything cleared up eventually, but it's probably not going to like the 4.30 gears. It'll probably take a week of driving, mixed highway and city. If it sets a Check Engine Light, you gotta fix whatever caused it and start all over. I believe you can plug in the xcal and check for DTC codes to see if it's ready. The P1000 code means it's not ready.

Are you sure it says "sensors" not ready? The OBD2 system has 11 "monitors" that are either Ready or Not Ready (or Unsupported).
Since you've had the car to multiple shops, I would hope at least one of them would have already thought of this, but check the KAM (Keep-Alive Memory) circuit to the PCM. This circuit supplies constant voltage, even when the key is off, for such things as the Adaptive Programming and the OBD2 readiness monitors. If the KAM circuit is dead, the PCM will think the battery has been disconnected every time the car is shut off and that will cause the OBD2 monitor system to reset. You can check this at pin 16 on the Data Link Connector. If there's no voltage, you need to troubleshoot the wiring in circuit 554 back to the battery junction box at fuse 1.105 (30A). If there is voltage at DLC pin 16, then disconnect the PCM and check pin 55 on the wiring-harness side.

I don't know if you have this info or not, but this how to pass the Ford Drive Cycle taken from the '03 manual.

Thanks a ton for the info!! Checking the KAM seems like what may be the issue! I will have them check this out and go from there.
He has noticed the p1000 code almost since I sold it to him! So it's starting to make sense now!
Once we get it resolved I'll make sure to post an update so it could help others!!

The best course of action is to determine what monitors do not set. You can check the OBDII state either with a Ford scan tool or with an XCal2 (probaly an XCal3 as well). Ask the Ford tech what monitors will not set. Once you know this, post back here.

In most cases, you can get a vehicle to pass even with the rear HEGOs turned off.
