I need to know what to do to cure my wiper situation! The other day my wipers came on by themselves without the switch being on. Today I tried my washer spray and it didn't work and then I tried my wipers and they only work when I have the switch on the fastest setting! Also, when I have them on and then turn the switch to the off position, them shut off where they are on the windshield! They don't retract back down to their "off" position. Please let me know what the cure is for this! I know I can count on you guys and I needa cure asap! I live in New England!
Thanks guys!

Common problem. Easy fix.
Lots of links here:

Richy04's thread has some good detail.
If you want to swap out the wiper module vs. dismantle, clean, and re-assemble, you're looking around $125 plus trade-in of the old core.

This is exactly what my wipers were doing. Following the instructions in the "whacky wipers" write up fixed it. Pretty easy and only took a couple hours (I work slow).

Exact same symptoms that I had. The drain clogs up and short out the wiper control module that it at the base of the motor.
Richie04 posted a solution here >>>> http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=47864&highlight=wacky+wipers
If that doesn't work, you'll probably have to replace the wiper motor and the wiring pigtail per the TSB "Uncommanded Wiper Operation" that has been out for at least 4-5 years. Don't forget to enlarge the drain hole while you have it open.
Wiper motor and pigtail/wiring was replaced under TSB 05-04-09. Parts listed:
6W7Z-17508-AC Motor A 137493
3W7Z-17A477-AA Wiring 812722

THIS IS A MUST! I added several more holes on both ends and some in the drain flap.
Whenever my MM is back on the road I'm going to take it to my work and pull the cowl and clean it again.

Just ordered a wiper motor and pigtails... Guy says they should be in by tomorrow around 10! That is quick! haha... Now how hard is the install? I live in New England and it is absolutely freezing here!

Not a hard install, but you'll prolly want to find a garage someplace that's not quite so cold to work in.

OK! My dad's friend has a garage with a pellet stove so I may go there... The wipers only seem to act up every once in a while...

The problem will only get worse, not better.
IMO, better off dealing with it now while you've got intermittent issues; you can resolve by cleaning out the cowling and doing richy04's preventive maintenance on the module. Once it craps out for good, you're looking at a replacement for the motor/relay module which will cost you around $125.

The cold will make you work faster!;)

OK, so I put the new motor in and noticed that they used threads coming out of the motor and a nut instead of a torx head that screws into the motor. So we installed it and before putting everything back together, we turn on the wipers and wouldn't you know it, the arm hit the threads and popped off! With a little metal fab, grinding down the arm a little bit, we were able to get it to clear the threads! Anybody else have this problem?
BTW, I now have a heated garage to work in! NICE! Was working in just a t-shirt because I WAS SWEATING! I love heated garages! haha
