I am getting ready to pull my motor to repair the leak on the timing cover at the oil pan. I was looking up the parts to do the job and saw mutiple numbers for the front seal on different sites. I also saw a repair sleeve and wasn't sure what this was and if it was needed also.
Any insight would be great as I am planning on ordering these parts in the next day or 2 to do the job right after the new year. If someone could provide the correct Fel-pro or Ford part numbers for the front seal it would help out alot. Also if there are any other parts that may possibly be needed for this portion of the job let me know.
I am planning on ordering new throttle body gasket, air bypass valve gasket, valve/cam cover gasket set, the timing cover gasket set, new oil pan gasket, water pump gasket, new front and rear main seals. This will be along with a new water pump, heat shielding to replace the factory stuff over the transmission, thermostat (180° P/N 14138) along w/a few other miscellaneous odds and ends.

I think Blackened300A may be the man to contact. He just did it recently if I'm not mistaken.

I did do it with horrible results. Thats the job that I snapped my crank bolt in the crank.

How did you do that? Anything I should be worried about so I don't do the same?
Did you just do the front seal or the whole timing cover? I found a timing cover gasket set that has 3 large seals and 1 o-ring like seal. I am assuming this is for the front seal but it doesn't provide a description of the gaskets within the set so I am not sure.

I have the steeda crank pulley but I didnt have my installation bolt. I used the old bolt with a washer and while threading the bolt, I cross-threaded it and snapped the head off while trying to pull it back out. That's what happens when you have a hundred things to do that day and you rush to fit in a simple front seal change.

Ya the water pump uses an o-ring, I am ordering one for the EMP. I'm not sure if the front seal is an o-ring but I know it is round, just can't make it out in the picture what it is.

The front seal is a actual seal. like you would use for your axles or the rear of the transmission. Don't push it all the way in when re-installing. It should only go in 1/4in deep. Make sure you use silicone on the keyway of the pulley and on the underside of the washer.

which front seal?
The timing cover behind the crank pulley. I have to pull this to remove the timing cover to fix the leak at where the cover meets the oil pan. Just wasn't sure what it looks like because the pictures I have seen just look like o-rings. When I get the gasket kit in and see what is in it I will know. If I need to I will just run over to the local dealership and have it ordered.

I got that, the pictures of the kit are bad and it looks like a black circle. Can't tell if it is for the front seal or water pump until I get it in hand. Thanks, does anyone know the OE part number in case?

Sounds like an oil pan leak to me. Why do you think it's the engine cover? I did my front cover on my 4.6 2v. There are 3 seperate gaskets and multiple places for RTV.
The bottom of the engine cover uses the oil pan gasket for a seal. I have replaced the water pump with the EMP unit on both the 2v and 4v the seal on the pump is integrated.
Got a pic of the leak? I'd go to my local FLM dealer and get genuine ford gaskets, have them look up etc. Get a good shop manual(s) too.
Blackened300a - Paul: ARP sells grade 8 crank blots. That's a big homer simpson right there! lol

Yeah for real. Just imagine if I had the grade 8 bolt in there and that snapped in the crank. I would be sending my engine out to a machine shop.

No sweat, just wondering if anyone had used the 4 peice kit with the 3 timing gaskets and the small round one. FEL-PRO Part # TCS45980 is the kit I am looking at. It also says something about a repair sleeve, not sure what it is or why it would be needed.

Ya I think it is the oil pan leaking also. I have seepage at a couple of the RTV points on the cover and the leak at where they cover and pan mate up. I used the UV dye to find them some time back and just haven't addressed it yet because it is more seepage than leaking. Had this problem since I had the car but since the tranny is out for a week or so getting rebuilt I plan on fixing this before I put it all back together.
I'm replacing all of the seals because so far the work that has been done on the car prior to me owning it seems to have issues. The motor in my 1st MM was beat on daily from 22k to 85k by me and never had a single leak or issue with motor or tranny. So far the front seal, misinstalled under drive pullies, cracked header, blown tranny, and these other leaks I am fixing now.
Doing it all at once is as much about a peace of mind and not wanting do just do the pan while the engine is out and then have to work on the cover in the car. Plus it give me a chance to look everything over while it is out.

+1 on the ARP crank bolt, and buying the tool to install the dampener. Water pump o-ring is very, very thin. I also bought the rear main seal install tool and it worked mint.

Where did you buy the tools at? I have found the Ford ones online but they are expensive.
I was just going to rent a puller/installer tool from Advance for the damper. Is there one you recommend?
Is the crank bolt the same as the Cobra? If so I'll order it from Summit when I get my other stuff.

Get the gaskets from your local FoMoCo parts counter (no shipping)
Yes the crank bolt is the same. The ARP unit you can reuse as many times as you want.
Yes rent the puller at VatoZone - that's all you need. Good luck!

Old thread alert.
I am installing the crank pulley. The manual speaks of this "front seal", which I don't remember removing. Could it be this O-ring? It fits perfectly around the sleeve of the crank shaft and I found it laying on the same shelf where I had the stock crank stored.

The seal is already installed in the third pic.

The seal is for the oil pump pickup tube. It comes with the timing gasket set
EDIT: it's way too big for the pump pickup. It doesn't have any place on a mod motor.

Are you guys saying the "front seal" referenced in the manual is already installed in the timing cover? The seal in the manual looks different so it threw me off.

Lol, someone painted that timing cover in the pic. I can see the front seal in there. It's usually brown or black. Now silver in that pic.
