:mad2:So, my baby has 58k on her 50 k ago I put a set of ford 4'10 gears in her. I poped the cover yesterday due to a grinding noise. I did not find anything to be broken and very little metal shavings. If any that is. I did notice moderate play in the spider gears and wanted your guy's input on this. Should I go ahead and go for a $870.00 rebuild job or just let it be until it becomes an issue??? So far it has not caused any problems driving.

If your going to be pulling it apart, then you may as well put all new parts in it. The S spring in the middle holds the spider gears against the clutches. You may need new clutches or the spring is broke.

You should be able to find a good condition 8.8 Trac loc carrier used pretty cheap. I have one that's in good cond. Not sure what it's worth...

I guess you're not local to him, I suggest visiting Scott Levine at Team Ford in Marietta.

Unless you're mechanically inclined, I suggest you get 4:10s installed by an experienced shop. Any speed shop familiar with 8.8 Ford rear ends should be able to do the job.
You'll need your shift shedule changed after the install if you want the car to run right. Lidio, Reinhart, or Zack can get you a good 4:10 tune.

DO NOT INSTALL 4.10 GEARS. YOUR CAR MAY SPONTANEOUSLY COMBUST

If there are any shavings the rear end needs to be taken apart and inspected. I just had mine rebuilt back in April-May due to leaking wheel seals.

Looseness in the spider gears is not abnormal. These only move in relation to each other when turning. A loose pin fit would indicate a carrier problem. I would recommend inspecting the bearings and races and keep in mind some of these had a problem with the axle wearing prematurely. This is a relatively common repair on stock or modified vehicles. Be sure to service this issue with the kit that includes both axles, seals, bearings and lube. The part number for that is in an earlier post.
