Just returned from a trip to the mountains of Maine. While there driving up a long incline section of road the motor started to ping. At 1st I wrote it off as bad gas but I always use high test from Mobil or Irving stations. The motor ping was consistant driving the same road 40mph 1500rpm in 4th gear when the ping would start. I even lifted my foot & so the trans would downshift but i never put my foot into it hard enough for the trans to shift into 3rd. I have do have a vendors tune. Is it the tune or what ?

Colder air, more dense charge. Pull some timing until spring. Try 2 Deg across the board.

Btw: Have you ever cleaned the sensor in your MAF?

I agree, if you have the ability in your tune, pull 2 degrees of global spark until spring. The winter blends of gas are terrible, even if you use name brand premium grade.

Interesting....winter gas blend.

I thought that they added those dumb 'oxygenaters' year round now....:dunno:

It might explain why I've been getting a light ping every now and then the past 2 weeks...

Burt, did you get it retuned after we installed the headers? If not, could the StainlessWorks long-tubes be causing a slightly lean condition?

Never got a retune after we installed the SW headers I wanted to do a K/N intake 1st.that never happened. I will clean the MAF sensor not a bad idea. I have a hand held SCT Xcal 2 that I used once to load a tune. Pull two degrees of timming across the board sounds like the ticket. just a little afraid I could mess things up. When it comes to electronic it"s like asking me to translate french.

In California the best gas is only 91 octane (when it is fresh), so I press the little green button on the shift knob to down shift to third, as needed.

Possibly part of the problem.

What exactly does "pinging " sound like?

A very slight clanging of the valve train. I have to read the directions to the SCT hand held tunner and retard timming -2 degrees.

Sounds something like your car sucking in sand...if that makes sense lol

Or like a loud click noise.

I agree

the K&N intake isn't going to affect crap on a tune, the SW headers for sure will

I know when my brother got torque monster headers put on his 5.0 explorer it pinged and knocked constantly, after he got it retuned it was better than ever...
