View Full Version : "Clunk" when coming to a stop.

I did a search, read numerous thread's, and even sent out a few PM's to get some feedback but I figured Ill ask the question.
When Im coming to a stop I feel a clunk just before I come to a complete stop. I dont hear anything outside the car, I just feel it. The trans shifts perfect and I can rule out the rear. It feels like its under me or from the front end. I can duplicate the clunk if I roll forward then suddenly stop. I havent had a chance to put the car on the lift to look at it, but Im curious what it could possibly be.
Thanks for any help.

That makes sense. It stops great until I come to that complete stop, then it clunks. I don't feel it in the pedal but more in the seat maybe. I have to look deeper into this.

While checking the calipers take a look at the front shocks also. Replacing them @ only 23K mi cured my front end clunking.

When did this start? Didn't we have her on the lift a few times over the last couple months?? Check everything, if you need torque specs let me know.

I just noticed it Friday when I was heading to my shop. I thought it was the tranny but its not. I may have to throw it on the lift and take a closer look.

Noooooooooooo! It wouldn't be mad at another Ford!! Especially that one, the car Paul got is HOT!! You should've seen the people stare at the car when we took it for a test drive!...... or they could've been wondering why these two lunatics were driving a car with plastic over the rims. LOL

Learn from my mistake, take EVERYTHING out of the trunk and do a few stops just to be sure!

Thats true!...You may want to fire a couple of rounds into the trunk before opening it...
Yeah and check the wheel wells for priusses. They come off with a little bug remover and a scraper.

Tonight will be my mission to get to the bottom of it. If I hold the brake and rev it, Ill see if its a mount or something like that, Otherwise, Ill have to pull the wheels off and really go through the front end. I would be a wreck if it was my daily driver making that noise.

Does the 'clunk' occur just before you stop, or when the car's backend drops down at a complete stop?
Mike.

Be sure to check the front sway bar mounting bolts.

Also double check your new rear control arm bushings. I think mine are clunking/popping. I thought it was on the front also but it's definately the rear for me, just too cold right now to care.

Thanks, I was thinking that too. I've had that common "click" for a while now so who knows.

Thanks, What am I checking for? They dont have grease fittings and I'm 99.99% sure they are tight. I torqued them to the same spec as the stock ones.

I torqued mine also but had one front lower bolt back off just a tad causing a knocking sound only on takeoff and complete stops It appeared that the bushing shifted ever so slightly. Still say it sounded like the front suspension, just wasn't. Just an idea.

Makes sense since that was the last thing I touched. Ill have to listen under the car to get a idea where its coming from.

OK tonight I set out to figure out what the issue is. I checked the calibers, sway bar end links and suspension. All checked out tight and together.
However I noticed that its feeling like when Im coming to a stop, the transmission is hanging up on the 2-1 shift before coming to a stop. I took the car out and kept stopping and going and after a while the car started acting normal again. Is there something that could hang up in there that needs to be addressed? My fluid is clean and on the mark. I changed it less then 15K miles ago when I did the convertor swap.
A few years ago while sitting in traffic the tranny stuck and started to stall the engine before it disengaged. Its been working fine ever since that one time so Im wondering if its just a glitch or a quirk in these trannys. As of now its working perfect as it always did. I plan on taking it out again to try again when the car cools off.

If its "sticking" and dragging the motor down I would suspect the converter not the transmission...loose converter bolts usually don't clunk...of course these usually are accompanied by a ticking sound when they start to rub.
PS Do you know how to test the converter flash point? On a MM its a bit difficult

Check to make sure the spare tire is secure. That can clank if it moves.

I have a 3K stall so Im thinking around 2700. It went away and drove normal after a few times of stopping and going. I have the J-mod with the springs and accumulators, maybe one is sticking?
