View Full Version : Is the Marauder a "modern car"?

The reason I ask this is because of something my roommate and I were talking about. I say the Marauder is still a modern car, but he says it isn't because it's no longer in production. This is where we disagree, simply because it's out of production, the car it self is just around eight years old.
What age does a car have to be to not be modern anymore?
One other thing mentioned when we were talking is generations define if a car is modern or not... to him. So in that case a Marauder is no longer modern, but a Grand Marq is. Or 2010 Dodge Ram is modern compared to a 2008 Dodge Ram... the 2008 isn't modern. Ya makes a whole lotta since.
Our car's aren't old school either. I guess by definition it's age. I think car companies no longer make parts for cars greater than eight years old. So any replacement part for a car from the company is a NOS part... New Old Stock.
If eight years or older makes a car no longer modern what is it?
Above all what do you consider the Marauder? Modern, outta production, Old School???
Thoughs....

Exactly, the most modern thing was the front end and the engine
I concur.

1979 technology, some of it even predating the panther platform

Prewar vs. postwar. D-Types stomped Ferrari in the 50's using Dunlap disc brakes. Don't remember when F.I. showed up but 'vettes had it early in their lineage, late 50's maybe? Seat belts, safety glass, etc. It's an impossible question to answer accurately since modern is a subjective term.

I dunno about if it's technically a modern car, but I know I like to pretend I'm driving something of the 50's or 60's era when I'm behind the wheel. :)

What I'd give for a D Type or a TR250 (not the Triumph) pontoon fenders and all. Shoot I'd settle for my old 67 'stang.
Dom, I don't think our car is "modern" but it is a late model. Because the Marauder version has inherent differences, such as the engine, wheels/tire combo, front valence, and interior appointments, it is unique within the panther platform series, Circa 1992.
I get many queries about the Marauder when I'm out and about, but not a single one concerning my Grand Marquis. Yet they are the same color and body style.
A workman was remodeling the house a couple of doors down and commented to me that he liked the sound when I drove away. I gave him the "cooks" tour and he was suitably impressed with the car, called all his hired help over and they drooled for a few minutes. He asked me to take him for a ride when the weather clears. Doesn't care to ride in the Grand Marquis though. LOL

The modern car is electric (Tesla) or hybrid.
The Marauder is a traditional car and is FUN!, Classy, and people do slow down on the freeway (comuter lane) and check my Marauder out. And it is not because it looks like a cop car but it looks cool.
Many people have checked out my Marauder!
He was just jealous and trying to get your goat!

It is a late model based with modern refinements, based on a dated platform.
Current production has nothing to do with "modern", the Ford GT Supercar is no longer in production but it has many modern features, some of which are more highly refined and advanced than any current production cars.

I've always figured if you can put antique plates on your car, it's isn't modern anymore. In South Carolina, the vehicle must be at least 25 years old.

Yes. It has at least a dozen features I don't want or need. That makes it a "modern" car.

The Panther is the last in the line of body on frame cars. It is old technology. Thats ok with me and one of the reasons I like it.

Yes, and 2011 is the end of the line. I'd like to get a brand new Grand Marquis in Black, one of the last off the production line. Then convert it into a Marauder.

Convert it all. Engine, trans, PCM, instrumentation, interior, etc. The frame, body panels, attachment points are all still there. Some small details have probably been changed such as trans crossmembers, motor mounts, etc. Enough great condition Marauders have been recently crashed that you could easily get everything needed for the swap, even an entire wiring harness if necessary.

Try to find another car that has the front and rear wheels as far longitudinally inboard on the chassis as the Marauder does. You can't because most manufacturer's stopped configuring cars like this in the mid 1980s

That is why the panther platform was winning the safest car awards. Front and rear crush volume helps alot at freeway speeds. Hopefully I will never need the crush volumes.
