I looked at the current Kelly Blue Book trade in on my car with 88 rounds, it shows the value to be less than seven thousand.
For this instance, that may be a good reason to keep it.

Mine doubles in value with a full tank of gasoline, worth a little more with kerosene.

KBB is crap, use NADA, thats the one dealers actually go by...
Here's what it shows for my car with 45,000 miles

I would love to make 16 grand back, but I think those days are long gone :(

Actually KBB is usually spot on with trade in value, if you will be honest in your evaluation of the condition.
That alone, is where most will over estimate the condition and get skewed numbers.
NADA is fantasy , the dealers I have been associated with used Black Book, until the market fell out on SUV's when fuel approached five dollars a gallon.
Later model SUV's were dropping so far so fast, that the bi monthly publication was not keeping up with the market conditions.
Now the auctions are on line and there is more pertinent information available to better determine the value.
Like color, miles, region

I would agree, but the 'books' online don't update as often as they should. The only real cash value is what they are rolling through the auction for, which for whatever reason is a closely guarded secret. Well, that's probably too strong of a wording, but anyway it's not an easy figure for the average person to get a hold of. Check all of the online values and keep in mind your car is not in excellent condition and that will give you a pretty accurate range of its trade in value.

Dont be afraid to put a stake in the ground and tell the dealer this $ is my trade in value...and this $ is what I will pay for your new/used car on your lot.(as long as it is reasonable) If they dont take it right away...walk out. I have gotten calls weeks later telling me to come back in and the previous deal would work. They make a living ripping people off, sometimes BIG TIME! They will tell you anything, here some I have heard, ''Well I will just sell this car to someone else then!"(I immediately walked out, he chased me down) and "We will loose 300 dollars if I sell you this car for that price!"(heard that on my Marauder, he was full of crap, I laughed at him and told him if he wanted to lie to me I would go elsewhere. I bought the car for the price he "claimed" was a $300.00 loss)...Its endless BS.
If you know the fairmarket value of your car. Stick with it!

Here's the original depreciation estimate \/\/\/\/ from about 4-5 years ago .... about 1 year off it looks like.

I would be glad to sell my 14k miles 2004 (only mod is delete tips/flowmasters) for no less than 28k. Everything I own is for sale at the right price.

That's why I decided to keep mine. With 96k miles, and fair condition, I'd probably only get $8k or so selling it myself. I could detail the crap out of the paint and the interior, but living on a dirt road and driving in the winter takes a lot out of a car. The engine compartment looks awful, as the intake at the top of the motor develops a crusty look from road salt and elements. I had the undercarriage sprayed off at the drive-thru car wash once a week or so, but that means the paint gets all micro-scratched from the car wash bushes.
OTOH - there's nothing I could buy for $8k that would be as enjoyable or dependable. So I thought I'd hang on to it as a spare driver for a while longer. I told my son the other day that if he can manage to not flunk out of college, not end up in jail, and not get some chick pregnant by his 21st birthday, I'd give it to him. (About a year from now).
