Wow, I just did an oil change and noticed cords poking through on my l/f tire on the extreme inside edge. Damn!

I'd like to move my new stock rears (245/55/18 BFG KDWS)to the front, and find the biggest tire I can use for new widened stock rims that will be mounted on the rear.

BUT....I still want the t/c to work, and the rear sidewalls not to rub inside the wheelwells.

Any ideas/experience? I need to do this asap, the MM is outta service til I get new rubber.

In additiion to getting new tires, you'll want to have the alignment set to carfixer's specs.

Done in August when I noticed the tires wearing abnormally! The inside edge continued to get really bad though, alignment shop is going to check it again when the new tires are mounted.

Yup, Dave has 305s on his widened rears (LilAlleyKats old car) but there is obvious rubbing going on, noticed it when the Naakes went in. He added a very very slim spacer and things are better now.

Yeah, something doesn't sound right.

Do the math, and you can figure the stagger, mine is up four sizes in width, and down one in aspect ratio. rears are 285/50/18, fronts should be 275/45/18.

Ugh...what a pain.

I calculated the stock stagger which is 4.98 per cent, then I tried to find a tire to match the OEM rear size being mounted up front.

Front Rear Stagger(%) Notes
235/50/18 245/55/18 4.98 OEM stock sizing
245/55/18 295/40/18 *.** Stock rear sized tires moved to front
Rear smaller than front in diameter
" " 295/50/18 3.50 Too small
" " 295/55/18 7.03 ????Maybe????
" " 285/50/18 2.13 Too small
" " 285/55/18 6.05 YES

Hmmmm....this board deletes all the spaces I put in to make it into a chart.

Oh well.....so if you move the stock rear sized tires up to the front, you can put 285/55/18 on the rear to keep the traction control happy. I have found that this is the only size to work with moving the stock rears up to the front.

Now to start shopping....;)

You don't need traction control... I have a 300A without it and this car handles awesome on its own... no need for these new damn fangled contraptions!

Still don't need traction control, I drive rain, shine, winter whatever. I have a 300A and no traction control :P

PS 28" tires on the front makes the marauder look like a truck :D

Ian, I always turn my traction control OFF when I get in the car, lol. And I've got 4.10s and a 3000 stall converter. I didn't like hearing that Dave had some rubbing issues with 305s, though. I have a pair of 305-45-18 MT ET Street IIs waiting for my widened wheels to come back.

He just bought the smallest spacers available and they worked fine. I'm still shopping for my tires online, hard size to find in stock.

Well, since our little girl came along, I've given the MM to my wife to drive during the week. It's much safer than her little Nissan, so I use that little putt-putt now to commute. She likes the MM's safety features, so she gets the safety features. I mean she's never hit the ABS threshold, but she loves knowing it's there.:) Same with the T/C.

Still looking to get my MM back, but haven't seen a good used TrailBlazer SS for her yet.... :D

Sorry but I have to type this, I have seen it several times and it's just something that irks me a little.

When it comes to tires, "stagger" is actually a difference in circumference/diameter between tires on either side of the car, not front to back.
IOW- If you are running a 21" diameter tire on the driver's rear, and a 23" diameter tire on the pass. rear, which is common for circle track/dirt track racing. This is known as stagger, as in "how much stagger you runnin'?"
The WoO cars run a different size tire on all 4 corners.

So sorry if this seems like I am being a jerk, was not my intent.
Just a pet peeve of mine. Flame away:flamer:

If your MM has traction control the rear tires have to be 3% bigger than the front tires for the traction control to work properly and not complain.

I'm running 295's on the stock width rims on the rear, have been for 3 years with no problems.

Will be going to 305's on a set of widened rims this year.

You're not being a jerk, but you are being incorrect.

Stagger in circle track racing is defined as side to side height differences. It is also the difference in height from front to rear in other forms of racing and vehicle applications. Any form of wheel sizing swaps to alter the height is referred to as stagger, no matter the application to fore/aft/side placement. Karting and Top Fuel are good examples of front/rear tire stagger.
