View Full Version : Marauder Hood: I can't keep it up

When I open the hood up it doesn't wanna stay up. This has happened before in the wind, but now it's happening in a garage. This is also when it's 15 outside. Can anything be done about this without replacing the hinges or whatever you call the supports?

Thanks.

BTW it's not windy in the garage.

Screw driver, block of wood, a golf club.....Oh I am sure the list goes on as to how many items one may use to keep a hood up.

Either use hillbilly ingenuity to fix it, or drop the money to replace them.

Bad hood supports

probably

I know when my brother got a stock explorer with a scoop the hood struts wouldn't hold it up anymore due to the weight....

Do like he did, use a baseball bat to hold it up

It is not suppose to stay up by itself.

It's only like this in the cold. Are you guys sure nothing can be done without replacing the supports?

Time is money.
Save some time and just get it from the parts store.

It's a ford man. You shouldn't need to open the hood. Except for an oil change.

One or both are very weak ,I just had my hood open today and its only 17 degrees here and it stayed up just fine, have you ever replaced a marauder hood? They have some beef to them, don't want that sucker coming down on your head or hand.

of course you can be a redneck and cut a piece of broom handle and leave it on top of the radiator cover :D ...I seen that too,but never on a Marauder...first time for everything I guess.

I don't know if the hood has ever been replaced. The first accident had it bent, but it was a bend smaller than a fist. I would imagine they just fixed it instead of replacing it. If I were to replace the holders I would do it one at a time with some type of support.

Its pretty easy they pop off with a screw driver...the ends of the cylinders just press on little ball type mounts, even the Gieco caveman can doit, def prop the hood open with something or have a heavy chick hold it open for you....

Seriously, Replace the hood struts already or prop up the hood, enough with the stupid questions you already know the answer to.

Of course the "high miles" might have some bearing on this? Things do wear out after a while.........

Dom, the first clue to bad hood supports can be seen when it is really cold. The second clue is when it shuts on your hand. I replaced mine last year, they were on the way out, plus I added the hood scoop to make things worse.

Before I got my new hood shocks I used a baseball bat to hold open my cowl hood.

You added the hood scoop to make things worse?

Why would you do that?

Actually I didn't know there wasn't a "repair" option. Now I know.

I think he was meaning that in hindsight it made it worse.

For about $1 per side: without breaking the retaining clips, remove the drivers-side hood support; allow it to fully extend (or force it if it's really shot); drill a hole through the piston rod (not the black tube, the shiny, narrow rod); put one of these (http://www.lynchpinexporter.com/hair_pin_cotter.html) through the hole; attach a short length of string/wire to the hair-pin at one end and the hood support tube at the other; replace the modified hood support; repeat on the other side (for convenience, really). Remove pin before lowering hood.

While you'd think the piston rod is a very hard metal that will be difficult to drill through, it really is quite soft. I had to use this trick on my Mark VI when I discovered that the hood supports were no longer available from ford (or else they were too expensive), and I couldn't find an aftermarket pressurized support cylinder that would fit.

I think they make a little blue pill that fixes this
Just remember to call the mechanic if the hood stays in the open position longer than 4 hours ;)
