im clueless. i took the 3 bolts and the pulley off, and i took off the little box where the plug plugs into. i cant get the 2 halves to separate. has anyone taken one apart before?

If all else fails tie a rope to it attach it to the bumper of the car and take it for a ride. Call me if it doesn't come apart.

Dave, I have taken mine apart to have the casing powder coated silver.
It was about 5 years ago, so my memory is very weak.
I believe that there was some kind of internal release clip that required a long thin push rod to be inserted into the case to retract/release the brushes from one half of the casing....:dunno:
I'll check the Service Manual to see if it is written up in there.
Also, IIRC the stator assembly is a very tight - almost a press fit in the front half of the casing.
I had to make sure that NO powdercoating got on the machined inner case...or I'd never gotten it back together!
I apologize for my lame memory...but I took almost everything apart on the engine and I get confused easily in my old age....:o

Joe, do you know if you have to access this clip from the front of the alt or the rear?

Hmmm...I have taken apart several Mustang ones to powder coat and had to use a drift to hammer the armature out from the front...don't use a puller because you will snap the rectifier....

What version is the Marauder alt I wonder....

Here is where you hit it....they are veeeeeeery easy to break....Holy crap is my thumbnail dirty!!!!

Crap!
Absolutely nothing in the Service Manual about disassembling a 4G alternator.
I really can't remember the details, other than I had it on my workbench, used an impact gun and a strap wrench to break loose the clutched pulley, then I removed the casing bolts and tried to seperate the two casing halves.
The front casing was unpainted aluminum, and the back casing was black cast.

If I had it in my hands, maybe my feeble brain would jolt back to life.

Looks pretty intense....i hae taken plenty of 3g's apart to powder coat...obviously not a 4g yet...looks scary ;p

well Joe never mentioned desoldering and im sure he would of remembered that. i just wana split the 2 halves so i can polish it.

Joe Walsh

If it is just a press fit, I KNOW that I didn't heat/bake it to complete the disassembly.

No soldering/de-soldering or anything that involved!
I would have given up if it was that complicated.

I think I have one in the garage that I split the cases on, I'll look at it tomorrow. It's supposed to get all the way up to freezing tomorrow. Hasn't been out of the 20's for a few days here. brrrr

"Also, IIRC the stator assembly is a very tight - almost a press fit in the front half of the casing." - Joe

That diagram you have Dave says that the Rear Bearing is pressed into the back case and the rotor. If it's a tight fit in the front bearing, there's yer problem. BFH!

That might be it....so a firm smack on the front of the rotor shaft with a BFSBH* should do it.
I do remember the rotor/rear bearing/rear casing all staying together as one assembly.

Global warming is freezing me... Last summer was the mildest I recall ever having here. This winter is breaking a 50 year old record for consecutive days when the temperature stays below freezing. The high temperature for the past few days has been lower than the normal low temperature.

Nope, it's still together. I guess it was just the regulator I took off of it.

I'f you try to force them apart you'll pull the feild coil wires right out the back of the rectifier plate. All I did with mine was take a propane torch and slowly heat the case and it pulled apart like butter.

Ok....Ima baby on the MM alternator knowledge among other things...."powder coat" what is that and why do you/we do it?!?!

RacerX

Chemical, heat resistant and really shiny! Esp. good on our aluminum parts because of the oxidation that occurs over time. It can look like a white fungus.
