View Full Version : Running rich, what to do?

My check engine light keeps coming on and I keep turning it off. After the third time I think it's time to take action. I called the guy who last tuned the car, but didn't hear back from him as of right now.

The engine codes are P1152 and P1132. Zack looked up these codes for me and they mean the car is running rich on both banks, which I guess means both sides of the engine.

The car was dyno tuned when it was pushing 8psi and Zack fixed the boost leak and now I'm sure it' up to 12 psi or 10psi where it should be. Since the leak was fixed the car hasn't been tuned. The check engine light came on around the time the leak was fixed.

Is there a simple solution for this or do I need to shell out a ton of cash again for a dyno tune? Not that the tune was a bad value, but they are costly if you want them done right as we all know.

Any solution in site?

Dom;

Help me understand, your car was tuned with a vacuum leak or was the supercharger just not putting out the correct boost?

If the S/C was repaired and putting out more boost, vacuum being good, then you should be running leaner not richer due to the fact that more air is being pumped into the motor with a given tune.

The rich condition CEL is usually set in closed loop, not WOT, so you have a non- tune related problem as I see it. check all your vacuum lines, may have one with a big hole like I did. Usually on the underside where you can't see it.

It seems you do a lot of things under the hood, review past actions prior to the CEL coming on.

In my case I did some component removal and rerouted a vacuum line which subsequently rubbed against the S/C pulley. Couldn't see it because the hole was on the underside. I found it after changing parts twice. I just feely, feely all the small vacuum lines and found it.

May be something related to the EGR valve or associated vacuum lines, of which there are many.

I suggest a re-tune. Wait a couple of months for the new shop to get opened up, go see Tim Barth, formerly of Modular Powerhouse. He's joining up with Modern Muscle in the Chi-town area.

Bob's probably just busy tuning someone Dom. Leave him a message, he'll call ya back. Get his oppinion before you go WOT again.

I would check the plumbing on the SC to see if it has another air leak before I bothered anyone else! My GM was running pig rich and all the piping looked good. It had a leak near the intake inlet. Fixed it and it was normal again.

Bob, the guy who dyno tuned my car called me back today. He gave me a few suggestions, but him and Zack are going to exchange some emails and get this rolling for me again. I thought I was damaging my piston rings from running too rich, but I was told if I was at that stage the car wouldn't be running at all really. As of now my gas mileage is going down the tubes.

Also the MAF and O2 censors must be looked at. I changed two of the O2 censors, but I didn't know there was a third. We'll see how this goes.

Thanks for the help guys.

That's the place...

Tim is currently in transit, shutting down Modular PowerHouse. Once they get the Chi-town shop revised they're going to expand and open a Florida facility and an Arizona facility. Marty's partner Jeff was one of Tim's partners at Modular PowerHouse, Marty and Jeff are staying in Georgia and opening a new shop called Mo's Speed Shop.

Tim has been tight with the folks at Kenne Bell for a long time, he has been one of the pioneers in developing, prototyping, and tuning new offerings from KB. There have been some setups (such as the KB 2.8 for 2V Mustangs) that were only available from his shop. He was also instrumental in developing the Mr. Norm's Challenger and the Kenne Bell system for the Hemi. He's one of the few tuners in the country that can get compound boost cars to run right.

Dom;

Here is the answer:

Cursor down till you get to P1132, it will refer you to P1130, same causes. Good luck.

I guess I need another O2 censor.

Thanks Pat.
