Now that I have my "Mistress" sounding the way I like (Magnaflows with rear cats removed, stock tips), I'm thinking about a K & N intake. I know it makes the intake sucking sound and all, but how do you guys think it adds or subtracts to the whole sound experience? How about performance?

I run kooks headders 2.5 inch exhaust thru borla mufflers and I do not even hear my cai when I get on it.

I bought my K&N from Mat (mpearce).
It doesn't sound like a sucking sound to me, it just sounds like a more throaty throttle sound. I like it quite a bit on sound alone. The fact that it looks better than the OE airbox is a bonus.
My previous best run in the car had been a 15.19. The K&N got me down into the 14's easy, with a best run of 14.52.

Get a JLT CAI. Less money and better sound.

My rule of thumb is unless you are supercharged it is better to have a louder exhaust note.

I liked the CAI for a while, till I grew tired of the extra sound.
The K&N has the same 80mm size opening as our MAF, whereas the JLT has a much larger diameter.
In stock trim, this size difference is not going to net much more gain.
Can I have the bottom of your air box? :P
I recently added the K&N on mine, love the sound. The only way you can hear the sucking sound is if the hood is up and you're listening for it. Otherwise, you hear a throaty rumble sound when you are on it and it's very noticeable. Raced 2 stock MMs and smoked them.

I had the JLT, the noise is overboard IMHO fun at first but got old quickly, The K&N has a similiar sound but not as often and not as obnotious. Either way, people turn there head when I get into it enough to get that noise. A loud exhaust is one thing, but that throaty intake rumble makes me stop and look.

No Van Winkle its because your car sucks:D.
The K&N is quiet until you open it up that's when you will notice it's there. We love ours. It will make your passing experiences more enjoyable.

I hate when that happens with my girlfriend. Makes my driveshaft malfunction.
As far as K&N is concerned, just bolt it on and go. You do not need a dyno tune it will be fine! I went from 15.6 to 14.6 with a flash and intake.

Personally I think the K&N looks more refined in the engine bay.

I also agree. I found the K & N for $231. JLT $155. So for an extra $76 you get the best, most refined piece. My "Mistress" is worth it!

Lol, yes indeedy folks, the carbon fibre intake works to lighten more than just the car, it in fact lightens the air entering the car. How do you make air lighter than air you ask? I don't know, but we have a Marauder in the 9's, so go ahead and tell me we can't!

why not just have a few 90 degree elbow's and run some PVC strait up and out of the hood and zap strap some screen door mesh on for a filter? or if your concerned about dust run the PVC up and into your roof and into the cab, leave your window down a crack and away you go. and if you need some extra boost at the track just keep some hairspray handy and give her a sniff.

It actually does lighten up the air, it also self filtrates through the carbon fiberness

It's not impossible, just unlikely. I'd be more likely to believe they are of equivalent flow capability, so it would make no difference. I'd whole-heartedly believe that the stock air-box is as good as you'd need N/A if it weren't for that baffle on the intake tube and the flex-tubing portions, just for the fact that they aren't completely smooth.

Heard the same from frdwrnch a couple years back. The stock airbox and plumbing does a pretty good job of flowing air. I switched out to a PHPCAI. love the looks and love the sound under WOT, but not sure I picked up a big gain in HP from the installation.

thats what they sent me. ill try to find the sheet. i dont think its crank because the HP after the K&N is like 267 according to that sheet. so must be to the wheels. im pretty sceptic myself

I think honestly that too many people get the intake AND a retune at the same time to make an objective observation about it. No doubt the car would feel MUCH faster after the tune, but that's probably because the tune is the main contributor and not the intake. Combined, they are surely a worthwhile investment, as I'm sure the tune will bring out the most of your improved, streamlined air intake.
One thing I can say though, don't downplay the improvements from simple mods to this car, an article that was linked from here fairly recently showed a gain to about 287-ish whp from simple exhaust modifications and a dyno tune alone. If I stumble across it again I may repost it in this thread.

Do they have the dyno numbers to back it up?
Check for posts by Jay from JLT or his website. He's done a before and after dyno test.
