I was under the car today and I noticed the rear pumpkin cover looked quite sloppy (oil caked looking) at the base. Is this common? Is this seal problem maybe or a bigger issue? Any thoughts would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

Any chance of some pics so we can get a better idea what's going on?

You have a leak. Wait too long and your rear end will be dry/empty. (bad)
Get some good Synthetic Gear oil - I think AMSOIL 75w-110 is the best, others like Royal Purple 75w-140. Those two will have the FM in it already.
Get some Ultra-Grey silicone gasket maker.
Take cover off, clean cover inside and out.
Apply the gasket maker around the opening, loop the bolt holes.
replace cover. Fill with fluid. Takes about 2.5 quarts
Notice leak is gone.
1 step up would be to get a girdle. I got a trick flow - it's better than a cover as you can put 5 pounds of pressure with special bolts on the bearing caps. Good time to do it.

Thanks! I am not a huge "wrench turner" by trade but knew by looking at it, that it wasn't right and I best ask here sooner than later. I will address ASAP and I thank you for the information. What would make the factory cover leak so soon just outa curiosity? Seems like a pre-mature problem for 58k or am I wrong?

Bolts loosen over time - when you take it off you'll probably find some were loose.
It's not a hard job to do yourself, just take your time and do it right.

What would the benefit be over stock cover aside from the torque capabilities on the trick flow?

Drain and fill plugs right on the front part of the cover which allow you to service the fluid instead of taking it to a shop/dealer.
Also recommend to use a the Ford racing stud kit, some say it's overkill but for $20 its a little piece of mind.
You can find an T&A Performance Diff cover and Ford Racing stud kit offered by Wes a supporting vendor here on the site.

Dont forget to polish or chrome the cover when you put it back on. :coolman:

Thanks for all the information. Just an update...I ordered my Innovative Interceptors TA Performance 8.8 rear cover and stud kit. I almost went with the Trick Flow but wanted to support the Forum site vendors. I didn't see any difference between the 2 in quality, etc. I hope I'm right on that. Anyhow, as far as I know, I need Amsoil 75-110 Severe Gear fluid (3 quarts) , but do I still need to purchase the "slip lock" additive from Amsoil as well or just the fluid to complete job? Just want to be sure. Also, any brand per say for the sealer? I hear ultra grey silicone sealant but any manufacturer over another per say? Thanks everyone!

Sounds like you are doing it right. great purchase on the TA girdle! AMSOIL already has the FM in it so you dont need to add any. I've always used the "ultra grey" product and never had a problem.
post back how it went...
