View Full Version : O/D not working...

Here's the situation, after I've reached cruising speed from faster than normal on-ramp acceleration the car will not shift into O/D. After about a minute the O/D light starts flashing. It happened earlier today and it's the second time it's happened since I've gotten the car. This is all on SR 29 in Napa which has speed limits up to 60 and stop lights. This time though, to "clear" it I pulled up to a stop sign, put the car in park. Shut it off, turned it back on. The light stopped flashing, but after I accelerated it wouldn't shift out of second! So I arrive at another stop light, just put it into park this time, take off and all is well. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?

I have checked the fluid, it's not not bright red anymore. Doesn't quite smell burnt but not normal fluid smell. So if I do need a new tranny, how much is that gonna run me? I'd upgrade to the 4R75W anyway...

Sounds like you're gonna need a tranny. Sorry.

Wonderful, my luck with Ford transmissions sucks! The FMX in my Galaxie went out because a tiny aluminum tube blew, that was fun...the T-56 in the Cobra had to be replaced because PO ground the gears to death and now this one. Ugh...

Sorry. It might help temporarily if you change the filter/fluid. Possibly low fluid or someone else changed the fluid and didn't securely attach the filter, there's just an o-fing that holds it in place. Chances are if changing fluid helps it won't last, but maybe long enough for you to find a good tranny shop.

Well if I could get the code read I'm sure that'll help figure out what's going on with it. I don't have a tuner and I don't feel like paying someone to read it so I'll figure something out. I think I hear double A, M-C-O calling my name in the not so distant future.

My marauder would hang up in 2nd sometimes - very annoying. I lived with it for a long time. It was the transmission shift cable that was out of adjustment. The adjustment fixed my shift hang up and it was then easier to get into reverse.
If you sometimes have difficulty getting into reverse, adjust the cable and it may fix all of your problems.
I've had a similar problem. The OD light will come on for no reason (that I can determine). The only way to get the light to turn off is to stop and turn the ignition off. Happened about 3 time since I bought the car in August. Fluid looks fine.
My Ranger had the Bolivian  sourced 3rd gear servos go three times in 70K.

Could possibly also be electrical, check the wiring harness at the back of the driver's valve cover. There is a bracket that some cars have had problems with, the wiring harness rubs it and wires get cut/shorted. Maybe even try cleaning all the electrical connections to the trans wiring harness. 2 of the 3 connectors at the dipstick tube are for the trans, the 3rd is for the o2 sensor. There is also a connector on the trans on the passenger side, just above the pan at the rear corner. And the connector at the shift switch.

I'll have to check that...I'm gonna get the code read today and I'll report back to let everyone know what it said.

Okay, so I went to AAMCO, they read the code. Came up as a torque converter slipping quoted me $680 to take care of it. So now the next logical question is, am I better off just putting a used 4R75W in or should I put a performance converter in?

Yeah, a member here has already offered me a 75 for less than what I was quoted. I think I might go that route...

id say go for it, i think some things have to be changed in the tune though. shouldn't be a big deal. also if you gona put the eaton on it, id go for a 3k stall converter. i have a 3500 and its just too much for the street, should i ever remove it i think ill have it redone to a 3k.

Bob, all '03s have the 4R70W, the 4R75W was '04 only.

I would NOT NOT NOT trust AAMCO for anything!
Get yourself a new transmission and TC from http://www.bc-automotive.com
You can get it shipped to you then take it to a "mom and pop" trans shop to get it installed.
There are so many nightmare stories with AAMCO. I'd avoid it like the plague.

All the times I've used them I've never had a problem. Can't really afford a brand new trans and tc at the moment otherwise I'd hit them up.

Yes, prior to the new age, $100 million, .200 prima donna hitters.
Bit off topic, I'll end it here.

The JiffyLube of Transmission shops.
At least that's the locations by me.
And what exactly makes the 75 better?
