well i pulled my alt off this afternoon, was not expecting to see this. i thought for sure that either the shaft snapped or the pulley backed off, but that wasn't the case at all. any one have any clue what the hell went wrong?

It looks crooked.

That is odd ...why is the nut half off the spindle?? is that all the threads you could catch or did it back off?
The spindle doesn't seem bent under the pulley...did the pulley hole go out of round?

Did you hear a noise when it happened, or was it gradual?

no Bob, the nut was all the way on. it looks like the shaft locked up and the pulley started to spin on the shaft. then it looks like it started to cut in to it and bent it slightly. it also started cutting into the timing cover and was getting so hot that it melted part of the cam position sensor.

Yeah thats my guess too...but the pic from above shows a crook pulley and a straight spindle :dunno:

the spindle is bent slightly but i think that is because half of it is missing from the pulling grinding it to pieces and then it started to bend

You have to screw the nut on, you can't put a pulley on with a hammar. Well, I guess you can, it will look like that though! Bob didn't help you with the air chisel did he Dave?

that looks intense, it seems like belt alignment issue.

Nut backed off, allowed pulley to spin on the shaft and wear out both the shaft and the pulley. This configuration of alternator mounting is such that the belt rotation tries to loosen the nut (ccw) instead of tighten it (cw rotation). I used loctite AND an air impact to put the nut on. I learned about the loctite and air impact the hard way, when I had the ProCharger I swapped the pulley to an 8-rib and didn't get the nut tight enough, the pulley spun on the shaft and destroyed the alternator and pulley. And that was even with cw rotation.

guess i didnt put it on tight enough. the new one will get lock tight and lock washer applied with the impact gun.

haha, me neither. i was slightly concerned, told him i was going to have to scavenge his alternator since his car tried to kill mine. it's just jealous because mine is quicker.... :D
