Not today but yesterday, got tired of the steering wheel creak every time I take off with my hand at 12:00. Took airbag off, (batt disconnected of course) took T-50 bolt out, sprayed steering shaft/wheel joint with Sprayway 077 dry release agent from my dealership (we call it the magic juice- it fixes all), smacked wheel down firmly with a socket over bolt hole, torqued wheel bolt to 50 ft/lb. no more creak. In love with the car again so I cleaned the windshield with vinegar and newsprint, tire shined it, Slick Misted it, Armor Alled it, and it rained today. Figures.

I installed a new (old) radiator fan assembly. The old one suddenly ran full speed at all times so I yanked the fuse and only drove on the highway to avoid overheating. Failed control module. Impalaslayer hooked me up via Ebay and a 5-minute swap cured all.

Was that related to the smell at all you think or still thinking starter?

clmrt
04-26-2014, 06:38 AM
The original fan failed a few weeks ago, I don't think they relate. I have never since overheated nor come close. I think the fan control module failure and the electrical pop/smoke/smell events are spaced far enough apart to rule out any relationship. Doubt does linger, but I don't think they're related. I was running with the fan fuse pulled for a couple of weeks.

Replaced my 10-year-old lower radiator hose. factory hose was drooping in middle and looked kinda pregnant..

kind of a tough job had to drop all the coolant basically. saved it into a clean coolant drip tray and then used a sock over the pour spout to filter off the small contaminants to refill.

installed the Reische 170° thermostat. removed and cleaned the coolant reservoir tank

Gates lower rad hose part # 22812- fit is perfect for marauder nice and snug. reused factory clamps for hose as those are best.

47$ on amazon would recommend!

I'm running that stat. The gauge is noticeably lower with it. I believe the fan comes on at 190, which indicates at the 20mph mark as usual.

ok, someone chime in and tell me it's not just me....

Took my new Silver to get it smog-ed. Even with Tune... car passed with Flying colors.

Raced around a little... got home, and realized I had never cleaned the wheels: the rubber was just replaced for the first time, and the old weights glue was still there. So I got a towel to sit one, and two towels for the wheels, the goo gone, the windex, two pieces of plastic to scrape if needed. I spent about 20 minutes per wheel, and they are now spotless.

Then I fixed an adult libation, got some water, washed the car, and then waxed it with Zymoil Titanium.

My Silver now shines, and feels as smooth as ice...

I had a fricken awesome time, the entire time. Took 3 plus hours, and I loved every minute of it. IS it just me?

Car under cover now... waiting for tomorrow! PS took pic of both cars together, but cannot get it to upload.

I've done a few and always run it to the floor drain hole plug in front of the drivers seat. Just peel the carpet back a little bit. Then I just take a knife and slit the grommet half way across and reuse it over the wiring, dab of silicone, run the wiring right on up the drivers pillar, done.

Where did you run the wiring of sensor into the car?

I ran wires for previous gauges by where the accelerator cable goes through. I didn't want to disturb those wires, so I drilled a hole to the left of it about an inch. Ran the wire through and smooshed some silicone in there to keep it from rubbing and shorting out. (Had to slice the rubber/insulation a few inches so I could pull it down and make sure the wire had plenty of silicone on it.) Cut the wire because of the size of the air/fuel sensor connector, and because it's too long, then soldered and heat shrunk the wires back together and wrapped in electrical tape. Then I put the wire in black plastic wire sheathing for a professional look, keeping it tight to the firewall. Ran it down to the header area and zip tied it, awaiting the bung TIG welding tomorrow morning.

Thanks to Eric for helping me find a shop that TIG welds.

It gets zip tied to the brake lines right away and up and in. If you snag it, you will have much more serious issues to deal with than just this.

Let me see, I took a flight to Michigan, to buy a replacement rear bumper cover, rented a small SUV and drove the little bugger back first class like. So the total works out to $550.00 for the bumper cover, $630.00 for rental car, $270.00 for the flight, $280.00 in gas and misc. junk. Roughly $1700.00 for a bumper cover and a 35 hour round trip, and I'm extremely tired.
All that because some hit and run driver decided to plow into the rear of my baby.
My saving grace, is a huge shout out to bigcowl-imp for the bumper cover. Thank you so very much.
Now after the complete custom paint job is done, which is why she's in the shop, she'll be sweet and perfect.

Installed my Kenne Bell Boost a Pump today. I installed the unit in the front of the trunk near the fuel shutoff instead of hiding it. I think it looks cool so why bury it? Ran the adjustment knob up front and installed it near the hood release latch. Cramming everything into my pillar gauge pod was a real PITA.

I wish they put an LED or something on it so you know all is well and turned on. It won't do a thing for me until I get my supercharger installed and get to at least 3.5 lbs. of boost, but it's one more thing checked off my list........

In case anyone was wondering about what a rear cat delete sounds like on a mostly-factory, 115k-mile Marauder. It was a cold start, which is when it's the most raspy/crackly. When it's warmed up (after a few minutes) it normalizes a bit. I still like it.

This was filmed in lo-fi and uploaded in lower-fi.

Gave it some much needed exercise over the Memorial Day weekend. Cleaned, waxed and detailed the car over 3 days. Just finished up the engine compartment. Put the Carlisle sticker on the windshield and the Carlisle letter over the visor. Now she's back under cover and ready for Carlisle All Fords in 2 weeks. About 1 hour of prep before the show and it'll be ready !! :D

Just after Marauderville I changed my diff cover to a B&M girdle cover. The car was immediately parked it until today. The cover was not a direct bolt-in because the e-brake cable bracket didn't fit and the sway bar needs to mounts need to be modified.

Today I made a bracket to fix the e-brake issue, tomorrow will be the sway bar.

here's a pic that I took at about 90% completion, I just had to clean up the edges and paint it.

Due to frigid AntarkDitka conditions in Chicago and latent piles of salt in the road, my Marauder didn't come out until the end of April. Crossed 120k on the odometer shortly after coming out.

Had some funny idle and power issues so I threw caution to the wind and ran two tanks of Regane/Gumout back to back and things are much better.

Belt squeal was getting longer and more annoying during warm-up, so replaced with Goodyear Gatorback 4060926. Installed tonight in preparation for a jog around the lake to Michigan this weekend and all is quiet again. (Was worried it was belt tensioner, not uncrossing fingers yet)

Stripped the wax off with soap and rewashed and did my first wax of the season in preparation for my engagement photo shoot. Pics over here: http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=93662

I finally got the swaybar to fit on the rear of my marauder. The sway bar end link attachment point was never at the right angle because of the car being so low. It also didn't fit because my B&M diff cover's cooling fins. After a little heat, a big pipe to bend it about 25°, and an hour of cooling, it fits perfectly.

You can see the difference here, the side not being heated was done first

Probably gonna drive it later today as the forecast looks clear.

Blew up my trans @ 125mph... guess the overdrive wasn't as built up as it was claimed. Comes out for dissection on Wednesday... Least I spanked the car I was pulling against *facepalm*

Wish the bill from Lidio said more than 'Fully Built 4R70W' for $1800... guess I get to learn from dissection.

Yeah, after paying for a tune that was supposed to pass emissions but didn't even come close, then countless emails which only few were answered with excuses, followed by me finally losing my plates for a few months to finally just giving up him. You could say that.

Who finally did your tune? Dean's?

I asked him about emissions testing. He said no problem, except I might need some contraption that hooks inline between the rear O2 sensors. Forget what it's called but it can be had from American Muscle.

I wrote him an email just now saying this week or I'm pulling it out.

There was plenty of that there, along with horribly lowered vehicles.

There were some nice WRXs, a stroked GTO, G8, and a turbo Fox body, NSX, and Supra.

Still, I didn't stay long. Imports just do not hold my attention but to each their own.

Going through belts?
Buy expensive tensioner and fix your problems.

Uh,well after buying the wrong thump, then the right thump which still didn't fit right.

Taking it apart twice to mod to make it work I still had a light knocking:/

Third times a charm I guess. It was wider than the stock cobra one and the face of the pulley was tickling the timing cover :(

And I had to turn down the od for a little clearance.
Hopefully the belt chapter is over!!!!!

Nothing to fix! Even the ortho could not believe it. It was jammed into a 1/4" space between a pivot point on a scissors lift (the collapsing top rail to get it in a doorway) It was in there for over FIFTEEN minutes while three carpenters worked feverishly to remove the bolt and separate the two halves. With their hammers and cat paws!!! I was so ready to pass out. And yes I had tears. Plus it was two hours later before I received anything for the pain..

After an hour my finger regained shape. No fracture, no stitches, no doctors note, no follow ups! Just left with a numb pain that I can live with. They expect the ligaments, tendons, and nerves to heal fine over time.

First knuckle was beyond the swivel pinch point!

Justbob, you thought it would be a problem with the Stainless Works exhaust. No problem at all. The rear 02's have to be removed to get it in place. That's it.

My seat bolts snapped from rust. Just grab them from the bottom with vise grips and rip them off. The housing/threads are tack welded to the sheet metal.

Good to know! Of course I really jacked my exhaust up high and tight so hopefully that doesn't interfere. As for the seat bolts, I ditched some of those years ago with my other loop.

Had an electrical fire a week ago, a no crank condition, and only charging 13.1 volts. Thankfully push starting is now an option. No more bellowing smoke, no signs of burnt wires, coaxed her 45 minutes home and buried her in the garage for a time out.

Turned out to be my DB electrical starter had a bit of an internal fire! It still looked brand spankin new except a very small torch mark, when opened it revealed a brush wire that came loose and rubbed the case which in return burnt the entire brush holder to a crisp... Only a year and three months old, go figure. Just past warranty. Bastiges.

Nothing ordered yet, not really feeling it, truck is readily available, enter lazy. :)

It's actually over the past two weeks, but I did install a musclemerc oil catch can today. New alternator, and Blue filter, were done last weekend. My MM goes in on Monday for hail damage, and to paint n install my spoiler.

Washed & vacuumed the Marauder, touched up a couple of small spots on the paint from a small flying rock chips  & replaced a missing nut/washer for a tail light as well as a rubber bumper for the trunk lid. Then during a short drive, the odometer just turned 115k.

What did you use/do to get them so clean?

Scrubbed with brush and soapy water to get loose stuff off, rinsed and dried off. Then sprayed the rims with Armor All Bug & Tar Remover and scrubbed it in very throughly with a scotch brite pad. Wiped them off with a rag and it was like night and day.

Pulled the rear bumper and sprayed the inside with truck bed liner. I hate that hideous yellow even if you don't see it. Removed the rust scale off the bumper and related areas and sprayed that too. Not really necessary but I like it.

I was going to try and fix the bumper sag but thought it was assembled differently than it is. Somehow when I put it back together the gap between the taillights and the bumper isn't as big.

Put the driveshaft loop on. You can see the driveshaft laying there. Not a big deal with the Stainless Works X pipe. I was worried it would be a hassle.

PS Full size spares on 300A's rule.

Went ahead and tackled my first coolant flush and fill today with a lil help from a friend. Also cleaned the reservoir and inspected t-stat while doin it. Why does the t-stat have to be in such a kooky place, Ford? :dunno: Oh well. Took a while, but beer with a buddy afterwards made it worth it

The whole tstat housing, COT and hose routing method Ford used on these cars is indeed pretty goofy.

In comparison, the 2V MGM motor is super easy to access. Right there beside the heads. With this one I actually had to get under the car to access it...goofy indeed. Too bad I love this car too much in the end to even care all that much :lovies: Well, after I've cleaned all the coolant off my arm, that is...

So I started to lay the Dynamat in the trunk over this weekend. Its a slow progress, and I have the whole car left to do. FML! But it will be well worth it when I'm done! http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/07/5ahy4yjy.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/07/ryma9yqu.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/07/8ame8yza.jpg

The trunk is tight to work in. Especially when you're 6'1" 220lb RedNeck. I'm sure the cabin will go much faster.

I was going to do that but instead removed all the trunk lining and sprayed everything with undercoating. Sound and rust protection.

I had to change out the intake manifold on my 2V 99 Town Car with the plastic molded tstat housing that gets brittle and cracks with the one with an aluminum tstat housing. Another goofy Ford setup. Cost me $300 in parts. Ford wanted $1200 to do the job.
