S55 was an order code on the 60's Mercury's that turned your Mercury into a Marauder.
For 1964 and 1965 the S-55 model was not produced. The Comet S-22 and the Meteor S-33 were also discontinued. This marked the end of the S-22 and S-33 as they would not return. However the S-55 would once again be produced starting with the 1966 model year. Mercury did offer the Marauder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury_Marauder) during the S-55's absence.

s55 is also when you paint your tail lights black, and jus leave 2 or 3 slots unpainted.

That is actually the "S-55 treatment".
Here is the badge image that was fastened to the early Marauders.

S55 was a concept Marauder which is where the S55 tail light treatment originated. Some pics http://www.supermotors.net/clubs/superford/registry/18556/67385

I think the red interior trim is a bit much, especially such a bright red. I personally like green better, as the stock gauge lighting (and personally, my radio lighting and footwell ambient lighting ;) ) is green.

The S-55 started in 1962 as the Monterey S-55. It was a model, not an option. You got bucket seats, a bigger engine, and special trim over the Monterey and Monterey custom. It was offered as a 2dr hdtp and conv. It was the Mercury version of the Galaxie 500 XL.
It continued in 1963 as a Marauder S-55, and Monterey S-55 2dr, 4dr, and conv.
It was discontinued in 1964-5. It came back in 1966-7 as the Mercury S-55, which was the Mercury version of the 7-Litre Galaxie.
The 2003 Marauder S55 was a concept that had a supercharged engine and special trim.

I like the look. I knew about the taillite mod but hadn't paid attention to other members reverse lights. Anyone have a pic with the S-55 taillites and reverse lites in Silver Birch?:)

Yeah, I'm glad that red didn't make it into the production car too.
