Anyone have an issue with the oil adapter plate between the oil filter and engine leaking? It seems like the gasket is leaking behind the plate.
Thanks,
Glenn

No problem with mine. Is it a gasket or silicone?

Had that problem with the falcon Replaced the gasket 2 times. Then it just quite leaking one day about a week later on it's own. Still puzzled over it.

Its a plastic gasket with rubber seals on it. I replaced mine a couple months ago. Easy but messy since its got a water passage on it too. The longer you wait, the worse it will get.

How long did it take you to replace the gasket? Is the adapter usually not the problem - it looks very solid?

You'll have to drain the oil and the coolant to replace the gasket.

Well got it done today. About 2 hours with breaks. Drained oil and coolant from the block. New gasket is really neat looking - very different from the "old" type gasket. Hope never to have to do this again. Very nervous driving around with a SC engine with an oil leak. Parts manager said this type of leak is not unusal for an engine with some miles. He keeps two in stock at all times.

Since the 4.6 came out, the adaptor plate gasket has not changed much. I remember the earlier ones doing the same thing.

I had to replace the gasket last year, not too bad of a deal, jacked up the drivers front side of the car, took the wheel off for just more room to move around, but not needed. There is a water coolant connection, so I had to burp the coolant sytem afterwards. it does get a bit messy.
Did you try tightening it up before replacing it?
In my many many motor teardowns, I have never found a bad gasket, but its very common for the aluminum to corrode away under the gasket sealing surface.
I always coat that gasket with RTV for good measure.

Yes, I did tighten them down first. Leak was from the gasket at the top of the adapter as looking from the engine side of the adapter up from underneath the car. So far so good - no leak.

Mine leaked quite a bit, about a quart a month just before the engine started knocking. It made me check the oil everyday I drove the car and keep an extra 2 quarts in the trunk.

More of an issue then I originally thought!

I just did mine when I installed my headers, a couple months ago. I also did the one on my 93 Mark VIII in december as well, that one was leaking pretty badly. My 99 Cobra had the same problem years ago, but it was covered under warantee. Seems to be a common problem with aluminum block 4.6's as my 96 t-bird never had that problem and had way more mileage than any of the other cars and it had an iron block. All the others were aluminum.

I had to replace mine on an iron block, very common on higher-milage 4.6s. I didn't even drain the oil pan, since I had just changed the oil, and just removed the filter. Obviously remembering to add a qt of oil when finished. The oil in the pan will just stay there.

Glenn, the leak was caused by your headers.
